View Full Version : How many players can SS support in multiplayer?

Hey all,

I've been playing SS a little online with around 4-5 people each time, and have been very impressed by the massive size of the maps (particularly the last level).

I was wondering how many players can SS support in deathmatch alone (not coop)? I was thinking that SS would make for a great platform for an action/realism mod like CS but with such large open areas you'd have to support a large number of players (say 32 people per side).

thoughts?

I think I remember hearing 16 people.  If I'm wrong, someone let me know.

LArge # of players= Very High Pings and lag

IVe noticed, with most servers that have 6 players, pings are usually 275+ for me, which is very high.  Im on a cable modem.

The reason why is there arent any dedicated servers running yet, the current servers are all running off of cable and DSL connections.

16 players! how stupid is that!

What's the point of writing an amazing game engine if you can only support 16 players online? Bah!

If they don't address that and increase the max players to something more current, like 64 (What tribes2 will be) then I don't see any future in Serious Sam as a mod engine.

Can you please list those teams that your speaking of, I have only heard of 3 that are "Serious" about it and only 2 of them have sites.  I know it takes time, but, I have only heard of a few.

Mods And Total Conversions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Damnation

It's the year 2065. Terrorism is on the rise and has become a powerful enemy as a result of advancing technology and its availability in the black market. Most notable of the terrorist groups are the Cyrics, worshipers of the fallen. Their tactics became too much for the existing forces. To counter this, a new organization was created, the International Strike Force (ISF).

HiT-SQUAD

HiT-SQUAD is a realistic teamplay modification for Serious Sam. While a lot of "Counter-Strike clones" have chosen to go the route of tactical shooters, we have chosen to empasize action and speed over slow tactical gameplay, while still providing the realism that gamers crave. HiT-SQUAD pits the Mafia against a band of elite Hired Guns. Both teams will have a wide assortment of realistically modelled weapons and other helpful tools to aid them in their objectives.

Lost Species

This is a futuristic MOD for Serious Sam settled in the year 2282. The player has to survive in a world full of dangers and the only way to achive this is teamplay. With 4 completely different races we want to create a tactical MOD where the player has a lot of ways to achieve his aim but may never forget to act as a team together with the others.

Project Black Light

Project Black Light is a cyberpunk first person shooter mod currently in development for the Serious engine. Decide whether to join and fight for the powerful and mighty Sunlight Enterprises or survive in the underground world that belongs to Project Black Light. The world we will place you in will be a world filled with power and corruption, where you will roam dark and gloomy alleyways or shiny neon filled streets. We will arm you with the latest high-tech weaponry and offer you a range of implants and armour to help you suceed on your mission.

Runes of Babylon

On October 25 2003 Doctor William Henry unearths a very important find in the purported ancient ruins of Babylon. This archaeological discovery appears to be very old to say the least, mysterious in its origin at best. Made of an unknown substance resembling steel this artifact has rune markings covering its surface. The Rune appears to be broken from a larger source. As Doctor Henry placed his warm hands on the Rune at 7pm the earth appeared to shift orbit as the sun started to rise out of the east again.

Serious Fortress

Serious Fortress: a class-based teamplay mod for Serious Sam. Our goal is to expand the ideas from Team Fortress with some of our own, and not to have "just another TF mod". Expect to see lots of objective-oriented gameplay, with a focused team effort required to complete your objectives. We also have a customization system where a player may choose between different weapons available to his or her class. Fans of TF should appreciate SF's roots while enjoying new types of gameplay.

Seriously Warped Deathmatch

This is a collection of scorematch mods for the Serious Sam game which introduce new styles of objective play into the standard deathmatch game. It contains three play modes; Serious ControlZone, Serious Objective Thief and Serious Rugby.

Starcraft TC

This total conversion for Serious Sam will contain a solo campaign but also a multiplayer mod. The multiplayer variations include "Starcraft" mod, "Possession" mod, Capture the Crystal" mod, Deathmatch and TeamDeathmatch. The solo mode will have 3 solo campains, with totally different strategies, and playable separately.

Starship Troopers

Starship Troopers is a modification for the FirstPersonShooter Serious Sam. It will feature standard multiplayermodes like Fragmatch, but it's main-focus lies on the cooperative-gamemode. You are a MI-Trooper who is involved into the invasion of the planet P in the arachnid quaratine zone. In every mission you have your orders which must be successfully completed by you and/or your teammates.

Static Sky

Know now that it is the year 2031. Just ten years since the introduction of the Belum1 brain enhancement and control system was introduced to the masses. Now we fight for our lives, or freedom and our minds, hoping that we find a answer to this Curse before we are all effected and all live under Static Skies.

Swiftly Tilting Planet

Swiftly Tilting Planet is a Serious mod team. Their first project is as of yet un-named and simply called Project B. It will be a class-based coop mod where 2-8 players will assume different roles in a squad. They will then have to accomplish objectives against inumerable foes.

War in Yovakosha

The player will control Rick Jeffries a member of the 17th Division of the Earth Infantry (EI). The EI is the future ARMY, NAVY, Marines, and Air Force combined. After creatures from an alien world, which scientists later named Yovakosha, attacked NASA astronaunts stationed on Mars and Saturn the US tracked down the creatures and followed them to Yovakosha. The US teamed up with other leading world powers to form the Earth Infantry to stop the threat of the alien creatures from coming to Earth. No one will know what they will look like, no one will know how they fight. Earth Infantry Intelligence says that they will resemble "mutated dinosaurs".

The Zithia RPG Project

The Zithia RPG project is a multiplayer adventuring and exploration mod set in a medieval fantasy world where magic is commonplace. Although it will contain several maps and adventures in its own right, it is being built as a base upon which others can easily create their own adventures.

Damm, I guess I need to back up a few pages out of the forum and into the main site every now and then.  Why arent they hosted mods????  Youll never get a full blown PlanetSerious if vesto doesnt start hosting those sites.

Do you think they could up the maxplayers to like 32 players in a future patch?

Boxcarwilli

That would be a plus.

32 is not enough for this generation of technology. Halflife supports 32 players (I have a local server that runs de_dust with 32 players) just fine, why can't serious sam do this and beyond?

Dammit I want 100 players on 1 server supported, so a mod could be written for sam that can handle such large numbers.

now that would rock !

Hold on, I'm not sure if it supports 16 as a max or more.  That's just a number that I think I remember hearing.  Before y'all get your panties in a bunch about this, someone should verify the information.  For all I know it may support 128 players.

HL has a good netcode!!!! LOL!!!

Sure if you wanna be shot 3 seconds after you pass a wall even though you have a 30 ping. Then by all means HL's netcode is awesome.

Bullet: that's an incredibly short sighted statement - I feel sorry for you. Wait till tribes2 takes hold of the internet community and see what you think then.

Decoy: I can't be bothered refuting your statement about HL netcode, since you offer no constructive reasoning.

Lastly - can anyone tell me my original question? If I run a dedicated deathmatch server (for example) - how many people can play on my server? I thought Croteam read these forums?

Boxcar - cheers - I'd like to see what the Serious Engine can handle (players wise). What can you specify with a dedicated server?

Tribes 2??? I just played a game with over 40 and the server max was 64.  Flying around in troop transports is something else.

I believe 16 in Coop and 25 in Fragmatch (there abouts).
The degree of playability at these settings depends on
the servers net connection/system and your net connection.
Does that answer your question?

I believe that the croteam guys will be able to tune up their netcode. Imagine a good mod with realistic physics, nice graphics and lots of players...letīs say 64 or so... I think that this would be an argument for many people to play SS and it`s mods.
Btw.. I am curious about the guys of Operation Flashpoint...they seem to have a good Netcode (if you believe the facts).

But croteam will do it`s best to stay playable with their game , I`m sure.

nguk have a fragmatch and a scorematch up, each of which can hold 16 players.
for dedicated servers, they rox ur socks off to :)
have seen delta force 3 with 50 players all on together, and the lag, even on cable was incredible. not sure if it needs work on the netcode, or how ur comp actually plays/sees the game tho.

Neko are you a troll? I don't understand why you want to put down Serious Sam becuse it does not fit YOUR idea of the amount of players that "ought" to be on a fragmatch server. If you like those other games fine. Go play them. I happen to like fragmatches with under 10 players and really only 4-6, for me, is the sweet spot.

I can undestand your original post, and even your comment (your second post), but your third post is pure sour grapes. There is more interest in Serious Sam as a mod platform then your feeble little mind can grasp judging by the number of projects that are going. And, I would point out that fragmatch is NOT the end all of multiplayer anyway. We over here in the SS community have another little multiplyer game that seems to be quite popular. A game so generously provided by and breathed new life into by Croteam. It's called coop. Does Tribes 2 or Half-Life have coop? Are we panning either game for not having coop?

Dude, don't come into our house trolling. I can appreciate your opinion but before you go off on a rant about how bad things are with Serious Sam understand your in the house of the Serious Sam fans. How about I come into your house and p**s on your carpet. The limit is 16 deal with it! If croteam chooses to change that in future patches or in a mission pack, then so be it. Is it ok to ask? Sure it is. Is it ok to troll? Yep, but you get replies like this one. Comes with the territory.

U are all missing 1 point(except Lupo;))

Great let Sam support 128 plasyers, let it be awsome netcode, but who will fill those 128 player gaps, i myself dont like fragmatch, i play coop, and 128player coop.isnt much, so 8player coop is perect.
128 Fragmatch may seem cool, but what is the point? If there are no players, and the maps are adupted to it....its seemingly useless.
Look at the situation now, 89 servers, roughtly 14-20 are running Fragmatches and scorematches, the rest are coop etc.
Looking from top to bottom:
0/8
2/8
0/8
0/8
0/16
2/2
2/4
4/4
8/16
8/8
0/2
0/4
1/8
0/16

u get the picture, alot of servers are empty, why do we need support for 64 players, if there are none? Well maybe they will hear about sam, speaking on gamespy with 3 guys, they said:
How Can SS be good, its made in Croatia.

Who cares where the product is made, as long as its good, ppl will play it, but the barier for the stupid ass ppl who think what isnt made in America is bull, well u get my point, so the community will never be as big as UT or Q3......

Hmm..Ovr and out
