View Full Version : 1st vs 3rd person

I've been playing SS for a few days (duh, so has everyone else) and I've tried the 3rd person option. *Call me crazy (next 8 posts: *Sledge, you are one crazy b@st@rd!!) but I prefer the 3rd person view because it give you the ability to use your "peripheral vision" that you lose with a typical first person view.
1) *Does anyone else like the 3rd person or am I alone in this?
2) *Would using this view in a deathmatch be considered "cheating" if everyone else uses 1st person?
The only dislike I have for the implementation of the view is when you're backed up against a wall. *You automatically switch to 1st person view. *Personally, I'd like to see that changed so instead of switching, the wall becomes translucent and the camera retains it's position. *Other than that, SS is a sweet game. *Thanks, Croteam. *Can't wait for episode 2.

I, too, like the third person mode. I would use it a lot more if the thing didn't switch back to first person in those tight spaces.
Croteam, I like his idea about just making the walls translucent or transparent in third-person mode instead of switching back to first person. Not a BIG thing, but it would be nice. If you never changed a thing, this would still be the most awesome game since Half-life, and the best of its kind since Doom.
Naw, forget that!
SS is BETTER THAN DOOM!
Seriously, I went back and played the doom shareware after playing the Sam test and was BORED. Any of you who still have Doom around, play SS and then play Doom. SS is more fun!
yeah i like 3pp most of the time
although, sometimes you do need the added aiming accuity of 1pp
but it does help to know where those keelrs are coming from =)

I concur about the peripheral thing. It helps a bunch when you are running like your pants are on fire from 20 monsters. You can shoot baddies while you can know a little more about what's going on immediately behind you. Of course, seeing the rocket a second before it hits you doesn't do much good....There's something to be said for moving around all the time!

Oh good! At least I'm not completely nuts :)
Yes, SS beats Doom because SS is much more frantic. It's the polar opposite of Counter Strike; a digital primal scream if you will. Going up against the endless hordes of monsters is what makes the game what it is. I just finished it on Normal. I'll start again on Hard next time.

I have it bound to one of my joystick buttons and switch back and forth between it and 1st person depending on the situation.

Nah, the transparent walls aren't such a good idea. ONI has them, and although it may seem a little bit better for the gameplay, it's not pretty when you see what's on the other side of them. It can also be used for cheating; you could discover some secret rooms and similar stuff. I think that it's better this way.
Oh, almost forgot, I too like the 3rd person view. Not that I always play in 3rd person, but sometimes it can be very amusing, especialy in co-op.

A good 3rd person view would have the camera do a top-down view of your character when you're at a wall.

And how would you then see whats coming at ya?

everyone always differs on their opinion on camera placement. in my opinion croteam did it incredibly well. i think this is one of those things that you just have to accept that things are the way they are.
oh yeah, i also sometimes use 3rd person view, situation depending...
i like the camera placement just the way it is
and the most stylish thing you could ever do is walk (not run, walk) around with the cannon equipped. pure style, PURE

Id say i like 1st person better. Its more realistic in that thats what you would basically see if that was you. I also got used to that view for playing FPS for years. And SS is called a FPS afterall isnt it? ;)

Wow, interesting thread... When I started to play SS:TFE I used 3rd person view for a while.... If you get used, using 3rd person view gives you almost the same accuracy than 1st person, with the advantage of the peripherial view.... So I am not the only one.... :P

Agreed.
I remember a review of Tomb Raider (I believe)
You backed up into a wall, or near one... and ALL OF THE WALLS became translucent.. giving away the whole damn level..
Really isn't the way to go... Unless you can do it a good way.
I use third person in BIG fights, when I have crap flying on the left and right of me... I also use it to PEAK around walls :)
But I mainly use First person because I can aim better.

Yeah i use third person all the time, a bit better for seeing that kleer that just missed you or seeing where your feet are without having to look down. I still use first person for when i want to 'roleplay' :) a bit more and it still tends to be a bit more accurate sometimes. Actually i noticed a slight bug with it sometimes. One time i was in thrid person and i looked straight down while facing a wall and the first person view flicked up (like it does when the camera is blocked) but i could still flick manually between 1st and 3rd and the views were different but i still showed my gun in both? a bit hard to explain but oh well.

3rd person might be okay if Sam's Animation wasn't so bad. I can't stand to look at it. That's not a critisism because it is primarily a FPS, but man Sam looks dumb in 3rd.

Sam looks really well in 3rd person... But as ^^^^ said I noticed some weird moves happening... When I run and then crouch (while moving) it doesn't start crouch walking immedietly, but a weird slide...
I use it sometimes... it's bound to my 'g' button so it's not far away......
Btw... did someone f'n notice Wussboy is back????????????$#%$#%

I prefer 1st person view. But I have used 3rd person view in sometimes too. But VERY seldom. A good reason NOT to use 3rd person view is Sam's bad animations and full bright terrains.;)

If you CROUCH or JUMP (i forget) .. or maybe it's strafe.. anyways..
while the level ends, when you come back, and the next level loads, YOUR FEET WON'T MOVE.
It's funny as hellto see somebody move and have their legs just stiff...
This usually happends on the level with rocket launcher
weird, i never tried it but I might now. So far I've only used 1st. I can see how 3rd would be very helpful I thought it would be really hard to aim with so I never tried.
