Hey guys, I have a friend who has 2 cds with .mp2 formatted videos in it and is having a hell of a time trying to find a program that will open it up and work properly. Can anyone give me some info, I have never even heard of an mp2 format...

I know winamp can play mp2 encoded songs, but for mp2 encoded videos ...
are you sure it's mp2 though and not mpeg2? there's an exponential difference as I'm pretty sure even the newest version of windows media-player can play mpeg2-files and a dvd-player can certainly handle the mpeg2 format

well, Im positive its an .mp2 file, I just checked the properties. So basically, get the new version of wmp, or a dvd player will work ?

i gave him a list of extensions for him to try out when he's at home. So, check that :P
mpeg2 is a video and sound media just like with mpeg1 mpeg3 and mpeg4
You need a mpeg2 video and sound codec.
Windows Media player 7.1 should have that codec if that doesn't work then it maybe a specalized mpeg2 format which means you need to find and install as many mpeg2 video and sound codecs you can find in hope on of them works.
Also the file maybe bad :)

_ms raised your hopes jedi, mpeg2 is not the same thing as .mp2, mp2 is just as mp3 is mpeg 1 layer 3, mpeg 1 layer 2. It was never as popular though, but it's definitly not the same thing as mpeg2
mp2 mpeg2 mpg2 mpe2 meg2 are all the same BUT they may use different types of mpeg codecs. Like with avi there is no one avi codec but infact there are millons and they all work differenly.
in reality the extencion doesn't matter you could name it text and it will still play it just find.
just as a refrence:
mpeg1
primary propose: sound and video
mpeg2
primary propose: video
secondary propose: sound
mpeg3
primary propose: sound
secondary propose: video
mpeg4
primary propose: video
secondary propose: sound
I think there's mpeg5 but I can't remember

Uuhm no! ...
look it up, mp2 is not the same thing as mpeg2, mpeg2 is what is used for dvd's.
As for mp2, it was the unpopular prequel of mp3.

I agree... I have many mp2´s on my computer.. all of them audio .. all of them with no video
mp2 is mpeg2 but as I said extextiond doesn't matter because mp2 is mpeg2 or could be some thing Microsoft does (can't remember what it's called)
It's all about what codec they use
This comes into play with some AVIs that use the the microsoft's mp4 and not the mpeg's mp4
but I think you are right thou that this may have just been a dumb naming convertion used a while back

Codec stands for "Coder / Decoder"... just random trivia
LOL
oh yeah I just thought of something
all the mp2 files that I had that used the mpeg2 codec for video I think may have been a hacked encoding just like with AVI's use ASF MP43 codec
