View Full Version : The world is a bad, bad place to be

I can't believe it.. I was using AIM and ICQ (web-based: go.icq.com) and AIM comes with Netscape, and the computers at school have NETSCAPE. So, I was using AIM. (Tons of people were using it, you know?) And towards the end of the period, my Substitute teacher singles me out.. She's behind me and she says something like "you're not supposed to be using instant-message are you?" Or something like that. And the guy beside me was like "yeah, you shouldn't do that"

Funny, because the guy beside me was watching Music Videos fullscreen, with the music not-so-quiet. I said, "Well you shouldn't really be watching movies, either" and the teacher just goes like "we'll i'll leave a note"

It's like, right.... How do i get singled out like that? I have my sound MUTED.. And everybody else in the period were using AIM also, and actually had sounds... Plus I get picked out even though i'm using something ON the computer, already.. And some ****nut who downloads Winamp, some File-transfer program named "Xolox" or something, and various OTHER things like anime movies... And I get ****ing singled out, next to a guy with so much action and movement on his screen to cause seizures.

I find the world to be hateful and cruel to those who don't do a damn thing wrong, and don't bother other people.

The teacher probobly thought you were suspicious because you were the only person with muted sound, like you were hiding something.

MasterEvilAce

No, it couldn't be the sound.. After a couple times of hearing the Bloop! or whatever that AIM has, other people turned their sound down/ muted it... plus that doesn't explain the guy with music videos :/

master evil ace, perhaps this will ease your mind.

you are in school, a public school i assume.

public schools are funded by the united states government via taxes.

nothing our government does makes any sense, we're an ass-backwards bunch.

follow the line, your school is ass-backwards.

You could always talk to your teacher about it if she/he is understanding and try to convince him that out of everyone, you did the least.

EDIT: Most substitute teachers don't know what they're doing either.

that's why they aren't fully-fledged teachers, they just don't have 'the right stuff'

Hehe, yep

Nah, I don't about getting 'caught' really... It's just the fact that sending text using a program that was already on the computer just seemed to be so immoral while installing other stuff on public school computers, and using a bunch of bandwith is just 'okay'

People are Crazy

For what it's worth, all the people who 'got away with stuff' when I went to high school are now stuck in dead end jobs, married to the same girl they dated in school (or divorced) with kids they can't afford, living in a trailer in the same pissant town they grew up in.

when i was in high school i got singled out for hacking into the school computers. The teacher was walking around our room telling us what had happpened and suddenly he turned around pointed at me and said, it was you wasn't it... i was like wtf? This guy knew nothing about computers, to the point of not knowing where to even locate the ram slots on the motherboard and he wasn't a substitute.

Yeah you're totally right about that.

I was talking to MEA from another room (we both have Comp App 1 3rd period, but in different rooms) on AIM, and so was one of my other friends...and our teacher walked right by him, SAW his screen, and didn't say a word...WTF, LOL.

MEA: I do agree, that sucks. Full screen videos opposed to AIM chatting? Hmm... best idea is to bring in some full screen videos tomorrow, and see what the teacher thinks of that! :D

BTW...our school computers SUCK...our room has Pentium III something Compaqs, and they RANDOMLY Freeze and unfreeze (Windows 98)

MEA told me that they have brand new P4 Compaqs in their room, but they are running Win98

Our school computers are pretty good. Windows 2000 and they're dells instead of compaqs. But I guess it still doesn't change the fact that our school district used Macintoshes for 7 years.

Well our school doesn't even have public computers - except if you count a not so public 486 in the library and the few workers comps in their offices.

BTW sartophiketle: so, did you hack the computers? :D

So, you are telling ME that I DIDN"T KNOW what I was doing when I was a substitute? j/k ;)

If I caught a student doing that stuff, I would just tell them to close all of it and revoke their computing priveledges for the rest of the day/week. Writing notes to their normal teacher is a little like tattling, you know?

Heaven forbid your school should have to deal with pentium III computers. Oh, the HUMANITY!

I dread having to use a p2 90 with 24mb of memory ever again. Doing CADD work. On a 14 inch screen. Only 3 years ago! IIIIEEEEEE!!!! ;)

As a substitute teacher, I must take issue with that statement. Many substitutes have no intention of becoming full time teachers. Also, some of them may want to teach full time but lack the resources to work full time as interns for six months without pay. There are all kinds of reasons.

Substitute teaching is a difficult, often merciless, and almost always thankless job. If you are in school consider taking it easy on the sub. You are, after all, in school.

The secret is that sports are more important than Academics. It is an axiom of American education. Equipment and transportation for a football team, not to mention coaches' salraies, add up to a lot of money. Yet even the most basic supplies are often lacking in the same schools, and teachers are paid less than garbage people.

When I was in California I was told not to bother looking for a History teaching job unless I was also able to coach. And this was in Orange county, California, the wealthiest county in the wealthiest state in the wealthiest country in the world. But they didn't want to hire a history teacher unless they could save money by having him be the coach, too. and that will also tell you how much value is placed on History as a subject.

I remember having three substitute teachers, one in the 4th grade, one in the 6th, and one in the 7th grade, and I regretted every time the regulars returned. All three of them were better and learned more from them then the regulars. So, I will agree, many subs are good teachers.

Don't take too much offense to the statements there D.P. I am sure they were just statements in general, as they may have had bad sub teachers instead of getting good ones.

I thought of you actually when I read the responses and wondered if you would reply, remembering you were a substitute, but I bet most on here would agree, by the posts you make, you are one of the smartest, and most learned dudes around.
I make generalized statements too once in awhile, then later realize it.

Wow, is that something of a norm? I mean, does that happen all the time? I am just wondering since my 9th grade history teacher was also the football coach. I thought back then it was rather odd. And that was back in my 1971-1972.
He was a good teacher, but he seemed to have preference for his students who were also football players, of which I wasn't one.

Six months without pay? That's insane... I totally understand why making the transition from being a subsitutute teacher to a full-time teacher would be quite a stressful and difficult one.

I had some great Substitute teachers... like Mr. Grev... this really, really old man (who I swear to this day, got stoned daily) and would give us long, long stories about how he used to smoke 'grass' as a teen and would tip over cows... heh.

Didn't mean to sound rash on Sub's, just wanted to give you a hard time found it the perfect time to inject some pop culture for ya ;)

Plato, you got the right stuff.

Yeah I've had some really cool sub teachers too, but a lot of times, I've had bad ones. Once I had this substitute teacher that acted like men were evil and women were better or something. She let girls talk in class and yelled and the boys and stuff for talking.

Another time we had a psyco. He got really mad at the class and flipped over a chair and started cursing everyone and by the end of class, half the kids were sent to the office where they ended up just sending them all back.

That sounds like me when I was a sub. One time there were a couple of kids goofing off and not stopping the crap. I flipped out and yelled at em both, really loud.

I think I didn't scare them because they are used to their parents yelling at them. Then you have to use some props, like desks, books, pencils, erasers, or even book bags.

There are many kids today that are retarded and don't care about expanding their horizons. Too bad...

im no teacher but ive had experience with it. teaching a group of 12yos something they have no wish to learn is damn near impossible.
