View Full Version : How would you like this as a map?

The story:

It is 2106, some years before Sam Stone begins his mission to the past. He has volunteered for his most dangerous mission yet. One of the human colonies, <unnamed>(help me here), has been evacuated pending an invasion by the Mental. However, the nuclear missile defenses, erected in the heart of the city, were left capable of wiping out other human colonies. As Sam, your mission is to enter the city by hovercraft, make your way to the base, and upload a computer program that will direct the missiles towards the invasion craft, before the base can be taken control of. Some obstacles getting in the way of the mission:
1. The craft is shot down on the outskirts of the city.
2. The city has already been invaded by the Mental's hordes.
3. Sam has only an early hand-held version of the NETRICSA, forcing him to interpret more of the situation for himself.

Also, the city will have a pretty futuristic look to it. As Sam battles his way through, he'll get to go through mag-lev subways, old sewage systems, and up a skyscraper to reach a helecopter. The images I have in mind should all look really impressive, especially the city skyline as you get closer to your objective.

I don't know if I'll even start laying down one brush of this idea, though, because it looks like such a huge project for one man, working with just some spare time after school, at the level of quality I'm envisioning. If anyone would like to collaborate with me on this, possibly even a small team, then I might go forward with it. (I like doing design, mostly - if you help me it'll mostly be in a detail and polish role, or providing any models and sounds that might get used). Otherwise....it's a free idea to use, and I thought you might like to hear about it :)

I've been thinking of something similar...

My idea was to make a whole new sp campaign of 8-9 maps.
The location was going to be earth just before Sam's departure, much like your idea... I already converted all the max payne textures by remedy for use in a run-down-holocaust-looking earth environment. But as you said yourself it's a large project. If I ever do it, I'd introduce a new player character instead of Sam... sort of change everything except the basic gameplay of serious sam. Do yourself a favor and do some design mapping first... (making prefabs of scraper ruins, car-wreckages and so on... that's what I'm doing right now... To make sure that IF I ever begin this project I'll have the themes and styles cut out for me already.

Cool ideas :) I sure hope you manage to implement them. A new single player compaign for Serious Sam will be wiiiiiild.

By the way, maybe you should wait for SS2 before starting to work on the actual maps? There will be new textures and features there.

Well, currently I'm just experimenting with different styles and ways to create ruin areas without bombarding the engine w. polys.

I think I'll need a lot of models to pull that sort of theme off. So, that means that I'm also working w. milkshape and serious modeler these days :)

Still... I won't be going into this kind of project anywhere soon... I still need to finish work on my ff2 map which I just scrapped and restarted from scratch about 3 days ago...

But I already have working fighter crafts and tanks that are going to roam an eventual battleground: Earth scenario. I'm surprised how flexible the movers and parenting options are in this engine.

But then again I know that I'll propably be dying to make a couple of levels w. the new themes from SS:SE so all this future earth may have to wait for a long while... at least for me :)

Actually, I don't think I could ever get something like this done unless I cut out some parts, or recieve a lot of support(read: messages saying I WANT THIS DAMMIT OR YOO WILL DIEE!) My intention was not to have the city look ruined like in GeeBee's idea, but just empty like a ghost town. That's both easier to make and more fitting with the idea that it was just recently evacuated. On the other hand, I could have missile strikes and aircraft crashes occur as the mission goes on - have an entire battle in the skies while Sam completes his mission below. Then I could make it so that by the end of the mission the city skyline has turned into flaming ruins, complete with a cinematic view of Sam escaping just as the nuke base blows up :D
