can you tell me what should be the acceptable standard for certain models? like world models, weapons, monsters, player models, etc.
so i know what boundries in terms of polygons to keep my models in.

If models arent animated, you can go high with polycount ( animated models take more RAM). With misc items reasonable polycount is ~500-600, weapons ~1000 (add details with texture), monsters ~1200-1800 (they are animated thus taking RAM and since they are in motion, you can add details on textures), player models same as monsters.
Note that those are my opinions only (my expirience).

ah, thank you for your help on this admir.

It seems from what you said, i need to tone down my weregod model a little, he's around 2500 poly's.

Actual polygon count isnt what really impacts (well it does but not in great manner), when you have animated models, with detail animations (read many frames) it is what impacts, if you go with high polycount be sure to make LOD, it will make people with less powerfull machines happy.
