Well I thought I would post a picture of a gun Im working on. When I first started playing serious sam I saw this wicked landscape and saw some monsters run at me from over the horizon... then I thought of how it would be amazing to have a starcraft/starship troopers type mod. Anyways I just made this gun to have some fun with.
I will probably do the textures for it sometime soon.

Its arround 1300 polygons, wich may be a little much but I like it. Any comments apreciated.. and I probably spelled that wrong :)

Update: Well im done texturing the gun, took awhile and lots of work but its all good in the end. Their are a couple places I might fix.. such as the front and back of the clip. Also it turns out I added some more polygons :) the count has gone up since last time. I think once I have figured out how my animations are going to work I will optimize it so all the faces which will never been seen will just be deleted. Well I thank you for all your advice :) My troubles await me now in the serious modeler :P

Depending where you will position gun on screen, i would remove those polygons on body (little holes) and add more polygons on binocular, while removing few segments on barrel. Try visualise where will weapon be positioned on screen in 1st person view and add more details where its most seen.

Ahh yes :) why make stuff if you never see it. Well thanks for the advice.

Most of the small detail on the gun (those small panels and rivets and such) should probably be in the skin, they arent going to be any more obvious if they are polygons. It is a cool gun, though the gun seems to tall in the region whee the clip fits in... but thats just my opinion.

Another thing, you can setup FOV and weapon position (or adjust model) so it wont look tiny, most realistic weapons are tiny in width and in game they tend to look like matches.

Nice looking.  Although you can conserve a ton of polys here and there.  Don't cut out the detail on the main component, let the skin depict those.

I think the barrel is using too many poly's it doesn't need that many segments I don't think, once again use your skin to smooth out the angles.

Another thing to remember is after you get it done and mounted onscreen, rip out all the poly's on the side that you can't see.  If you can't see them in game then they don't need to be there.  :)

So 1300 for a final model before optimizing isn't too bad, after you use the skin for detail, lower the segments in the barrel and remove most of the non-visible poly's you'll easily be back down to a more graphics card friendly version.  :)

Amazin' gun! Well done... I'm trying to experiment with the modeller at the moment but I still need some tutorials!  Any help would be good.

Cheers. Keep up the good work.
