I think I have a cool idea for a fragmap in SE: pong. with a DM twist.

Basically, there will probably be a big hole, with multiple levels, at the top of which is the 'pong' game. Basically you have 'cannons' (and I don't mean the weapon; they're part of the map), and anyone can play pong. One person starts out by shooting the ball. The other person tries to bounce it back, or catch it in their cannon. If they fail and it goes into the slot behind them, they die, or are put in the cage to the mercy of the other player, or some other cruel and humiliating punishment. If they catch it in their cannon, they get to shoot it back, and might even get some bonus. It goes back and forth until someone loses or it falls down the fragging hole (more on that later). So this would require people to move their cannons back and forth. I'm thinking I could somehow use a touchfield or something on either side.

The cannon, I'm thinking, could be shot into the hole (if possible). No, that's a terrible idea. Maybe it can fall into the hole, but not be shot straight into it. Or, maybe you have to aim it just right to go into the hole. This is where I'm asking you for suggestions ;)

The whole map wouldn't be entirely based on Pong, though, I think I'll add lots of other features. I just think it could add a lot of fun to it. The map would still have traps and secret areas, etc. Oh, maybe you could get INSIDE of the cannon or the ball! Just kidding ;)

Could anyone tell me if this is possible or not, without modding? Modding would take the point away, since no one would want to download a mod. I think it would be a lot of fun if modding/code wasn't required. Also, I'm kinda a newbie at mapping, and I see that this is a huge project, and I might not do it for a long time, or I might not ever, but I think it's a really cool idea so I want to try it if I can :D

Oh, and tell me if you love or hate my idea, and if I'm just being an idiot. I'd like to know :D

Im makin a map named Car and Train, its pretty nice, its like a stop and go, you hit 1 of 4 switches, and they take you on a diff road, just a basic fun map

Of course it might be possible, but if it was, it'd be pretty hard....
First of, you'd need an entity that could act as a ball, maybe a rolling stone?
Then you need a series of triggers/touchfields moving brushes to move the pads around, which is probably the most complicated part.

How would I 'shoot' the entity? I've been experimenting with RollingStone, and the only way I see to get it to start moving is to put it up in the air and make it bounce :s

How about putting that ball on a moving brush which you can raise very fast by the usage of a switch?

How would you be able to make a moving brush go by its own path though? Or would it be preset random backwards and forwards, cos that would suck. You would remember after a while where it goes :P

Or are you talking about a brush that pushes the ball in the air? I'm getting confused, It's too late at night :S

Ah! Good idea. That should work. I think I'll put a touchzone on either side of the 'cart', making it move back and forth - but wait! If I trigger the cart itself it will only go sequintially, not back and forth! How can I pull this off?


EDIT: I'm implying that the cart (that you move back and forth in to shoot/bounce the ball) is a moving brush, with markers at each position. If a touchfield triggers the cart, it will only go to the next marker, not back and forth. Oh, and each marker will have the `StopMoving` flag set, if it wasn't clear.

Moving brush is the answer. ;)

This sounds very fun but yes, making the movements isnīt that easy I think.

Yes yes, I know what a moving brush is, I'm not that much of a noob! ;)

The problem is getting it to move in a specific direction, instead of the next sequential marker.

As far as my knowledge goes (and it isnt that long), the moving brush has to follow a path of some sort. It cannot be shot/bounced/etc in a direction. The only other thing it can do is be destroyed. PLEASE do not quote me, this is from my crappy knowledge, others probably know better.

@Kk: You can also stop it and then let it run on and also teleport it.
@Tman: That requires you to glue one MB marker to another moving brush which you can move to set the direction of the other moving brush.

Hmm, I got the idea of making a barrel, and adding a moving brush, where it bursts, and shoots the ball, just set its bounce high, and its health low ;)

Hmmm.... This sounds quite impossible to me. Not that I'm an experienced mapper, but, for example:

1. How would you like to control the speed at which you shoot a rolling stone?
2. I don't think a touchfield in the opponent's cannon will "see" a rolling stone falls through.

So I think you need to make a mod for this, however, I'm not very good at SED.

Gravity!!
Heres a idea:

1. Make a barrel, and make it spawn a rolling boulder in it

2. Make a moving bush in the barrel to burst, and retract from its burst

3. Make some gravity in the middle of the room to go in torwards the place

If you want the cannon to move, make it a moving brush with torus movement, and parent a copier in the barrel, its simple, if you want me to, I can make an example

Oddly enough i made something like you describe a long time ago.
A barrel, with a moving brush piston that would shoot out a Rolling Stone entity very fast.
I think i mentioned it in Post Your Crap once, but im not sure i ever actualy posted it

After learning most or all of them, imagine things you can do. :D

The thing I hope most is that if SED 2.0 will have terrain generator/topmap editor implemented. Thatīd be the only thing I just canīt do correctly in SED.

It most likely will have, I can't imagine how it wouldn't when you look at the other features they revealed until now.

Oh, but I haven't ever been as excited for a game as this one!!! And yeah, a terrain genarator (plus topmap generator) would be nice, cause my Terragen-made topmaps suck...
