I work with the serious editor very often, but i never did a good room. At the end of the work in a room, it is "empty": at the end of battles, there isn't any decoration.
For this, i want to pose a question at the serious editor experts: how to make a good room? :)

Columns, windows and things carved in the walls should do the job.

I know exactly what you mean. I always used to have problems like that. The trick is to do things Shrinker said and GOOD lighting. Lighting can dramatically effect the way you perceive the room. Problem is, it's hard to get the hang of.
Another trick is to use models. If you dont/cant make your own, just open up the models part of your virtual tree and use them! :D It's simple!

There's much more than just those few models in the models part of the VT.
Just insert a Modelholder2 entity in the map and set the model property to a mdl file, make sure you have extracted the gros first though.

It's a conus primitive with 16 sides and the outer-flag unchecked... and it's rotated.
Have a good theme, and make everything go with that theme. Also, being good at texturing will make your maps MUCH better. Remember, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+A makes your life easier ;)
I personally don't have any experience making a 'real' map, but from my personal experience playing them, these make good ones. But don't worry, soon everybody will be playing my Pong Fragmap!! :D
Speaking of the Outer flag... what exactly does it DO?

To get an idea of the kind of detailing to add it can help to look at the real world...
Start looking at how the rooms in buildings you go to are detailed.
Get library books on architecture.
Do google image search for the kinds of rooms you want to make.
