when making a terrain in SED you can set the value called "Amplitude" to change the contrast between highs and lows, effectivly making the terrain higher (or shorter)

yes but when i set it too high, then the monutains are not round, but very angularly, and i want to have realistic mountains, and when i set the number above amplitude higher, then the heightmap hs too much polygons, and then it takes much time to change textures etc.

you could use maya PLE and use the paintbrush tool, setting it to pull to create mountains and push to create valleys. then set the brush to smooth to smooth out the edges. then import.

You can also create a high-poly terrain first and then merge vertices at places where you don't need such a high poly count.
Takes lots of time though.
Here's something I did ages ago, 117 polies if I recall correctly ;)

I dont know if you are doing this already but a good texture can fix everything. For example, Timesplitters 1 & 2 use hardly any polygons for their characters but they have very detailed textures which allows them to have smooth motions and still look and run good. So try using lots of Terragen or Bryce's features to make detailed textures. Works for me! :D
