View Full Version : Anyone wanna make Serious Fortress?

i don't really have any technical skills (although i do want to learn to map)
I wan to make a TF mod for SS based on the premise that the game will be balanced acording to SS, not to older TF games.

i will(would) be project leader, basically i'll have the vision. i just need talented people to bring that to life.

Five of us have already assembled a Serious Fortress team, and work on the mod is well underway.  We're opening up the website this weekend once our hosting provider sets us up.  Right now, the temporary website is at http://www.crosswinds.net/~iambwian/fortress/

Sorry to upstage you.  At least two of us have been planning this mod since Public Test 1.  Feel free to contact any of us if you have questions.

Nilspack, please read our weapons pages. There is a LOT of info there about what we plan to have. However, our first public release will probably not have all features implemented (such as weapons).

Caid, I actually don't know what you're talking about ;)

Anyone interested in keeping up with the progress of the mod, please sign up on our forums (http://pub55.ezboard.com/bseriousfortress) and let the ideas board explode. I can't promise everything, but we will read everything. We'll soon be at better hosting, and with more info. I'll be sure to announce that practically everywhere. :)

what i mean is that the thing that made me want to make SF was that i noticed that the RL had 4 rpckets in the clip
it'd be cool if you animated it so that the RL showed you how many rockets were left

Yeah, we're gonna do that animation.  I need to figure out how, but it looks easy enough.  Did I mention it'll have a select fire that lets you fire 1, 2, or all 4 rockets at a time?  :biggrin:

After checking out Serious Fortress's website, I must say, you guys seem to be doing a great job. One suggestion: possibly the addition of an "stealth" feature for the sniper and for the spy? it might take a bit of work, but in the long run, i think it would be worth it. Like, use the invisible look from UT (the little white specklies that float in the place of the person), it would provide a cool effect if done correctly

We already have planned that the spy will make no footstep sounds even if he's running.  But I don't think we want to actually make him invisible.  He can disguise as a member of the enemy team, isn't that good enough?  :)

We've toyed with an idea of making a character be able to stand in one place, and slowly becoming more transparent. If we did allow some sort of camoflauge beyond the changing of skins to pretend to be another team class, this is probably the highest extent we would go.

Either way, until we have working mod of what we have planned, I doubt a feature that possibly game-unbalancing will be implemented. We just don't need the extra stress just yet. ;)

Do we really need another "Fortress" game? I'm not dissing anyone, but maybe you could use your talents on some original ideas? Just a thought..

I don't like to be blunt, but here I go anyway.

Yes. Absolutely. Undoubtedly in my mind, there needs to be another Fortress game. I would not have spent the last few months talking with the other members of the team, planning things out, and getting ready to pay for hosting if that were not the case. :)

As for originality, please read our mod's website features, and you will see that we have plenty of new ideas. This is also where the player's ideas come into play. If we see something we like, we'll try to incorporate it eventually.

If you don't like fortress, I'm ok with that. Don't download it. You'll feel like you've wasted your time for something you already know you won't like. However, you might like some of the changes we have made to the playing style, that may change your mind, you never know... :)

If we don't do Serious Fortress, someone else will.  So we have to make sure we do it very well.  And at least we'll have it out before TF2, so you can play Fortress with a great engine.  :)

All jokes aside, we know there's a lot of fortress mods out there, at least one for each successful FPS game.  That's because there's a lot of demand for fortress mods -- people wouldn't make these mods if they knew no one wanted to play them.  We feel that the Serious Engine can bring something to Team Fortress that other game engines can't -- scale.  And we have plenty of new ideas to set us apart from the other fortress mods.  Stay tuned.  It's going to be good.  I promise.  :)

Okay Entroper, you make it sound very promising! (no joke). And I have no doubts you guys got talents and all, I just thought it would be better for everyone that you spent them on something original (like in old days; Action Quake for Q2, QRally for Quake etc). I get kind of sad when I see all these Fortress mods coming out for each own game.

We have Quake 3 Team Arena and we will eventually get Team Fortress 2...

This is just my opinion, wouldn't be surprised if the whole world disagrees. I'm used to that :)

I hope that this mod ends up a bit like weapons factory for quake 2.. I still stand by my opinion that of all the team fortress style mods, that was the best, due to the sheer variety of play. Everything from jetpacking scouts, to insane super-engineers, and mercenary assassins were all in the class list. It was very varied, and it was great! ;-)

Weapons Factory for Quake 3 was pretty cool. I liked the invisibility feature for the spy and the flying option for the scout.

Q3F didn't seem to be very cool for me. I thought it was more like Half-Life TFC (which sucked) in that it was packed with lamers.
It also didn't have the "feel" that the last two Team Fortress games possessed. It seemed to gaudy.
