View Full Version : Another Idea for a Mod

I think it would be really cool if someone did a mod based on Ender's Game. The way the engine handles gravity would probably allow someone to set up a battle room: a cube with gravity just along the inside edges of the room. But, it leaves out the "stars". It would also be awe if there was a practice mode with the balls, and if the engine automatically filled in the other 80 "soldiers" if it was a one-on-one battle. Ok, i gotta stop before my drool destroys my keyboard.

This game engine would do ANYTHING involving space or multi-gravity combat really well. I haven't read Ender's Game in a while, so I only vaguely know what you're talking about. Sounds like a great idea, though.
THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING WHEN I FOUND THE AG ROOM!
OMG!
let's get a team together eh?

Ender's game, been a while since I read that one. Great idea though! Good luck to you =)

The eaisest thing would to make a map pack. Something real cool and based on SS. That way you learn the editor and what can and cant be done rather than jumping into something huge.
map PACk or map?
there would only be one map, the stars would be placed randomly (ser_bRandom stars = 1?) or according to a file (starcfg1.cfg)
i really wanna do this?
anyone interested?
anyone at all?

Enders Game. In every game I've played, I wanted to make a mod that would simulate Ender's Game. That's my favorite book. I tried it in a few games, but their engines wouldn't allow it without having MAJOR slowdowns. It looks promising with Serious Sam. If we can ever get this going, count me in!

It has been a while since I read Ender, can't recall if the stars you are talking about would just be texture(s) or objects in an all surrounding skybox or if they would be mini-stars within the game area that one would move around and between.
Either way, I think Serious has what you are looking for. There is a learning curve, particularly if you undertake custom coding and creating custom entities.
Take a look at my gravity tutorial writeups and accompanying levels that came with the game for some crude work in this area (they are in the ...help/extras directory within Serious on your c: drive and also on the CD-ROM.
Other beta/moderator folks have experimented/explored more aggressively, getting into using moving gravity markers and multiple gravity marker influence within a given sector (?) (one assigned to the sector, other(s) assigned to things/movers/enemies within the sector?.....my memory is bad on this....don't take my word for it.. I don't want to misrepresent or mislead).
Croteam confirmed to me that it should be possible (I think they said easy.....but not for beginner me I bet) to create a custom gravity marker entity that could generate the effect of the combined gravitational influence of more than one gravity source (each would be marked with a ...well... maker :) ).
And if you exceed the limit (of 10 I think) gravity markers per world base, just throw in more world bases. And I think Croteam indicated that it would be a "trivial" exercise to expand the limit in a mod....they opted not to do so in the game because of the space potentially consumed by a larger number of unused gravity marker holders per world base..... something like that.
Is this neat or what?!
Have fun.
There's a new Ender's Game book out. It's called Shadow of the Hegemon and follows Bean's adventures with Ender's brother, Peter (hence the name). It's pretty good, if you liked Ender's Shadow. The difference between it and Ender's Shadow isn't near as drastic as Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead either.
OKAY i'm going ahead wit this idea
i'm learning to map and a friend of mine is helping with textures
anyone interested in helping my ICQ number is 9193495
I'm trying to get some people from an MB i go to to help

well heck, count me in. I can help map, document, code, throw up ideas, whatever. BTW, the stars are simply cubes place in a random, but fair, or symmetrical arrangement. The only exceptions i can think of are the attempts to beat ender in unfair competition.
the way i see stars, they're like big Q3 crates with handle bars coming out from each of the edges
thionk of a box of cells from SS
from the top view, it would look like a square with short lines going diagonally out of each corner
everyone interested, get on my icq list 9193495
