Hi Folks,
is there a plan to code "Serious CTF"? I Hope so! ;)

I've been kinda shocked that I haven't heard of one either. I've been messing around the SDK, maybe this is a good project idea for me. Hmmm, just need some mappers...

There is definately a dire need for a Serious CTF. With map sizes that could be measured in square miles, there could be some killer levels. I'm willing to commit some time to making maps, if someone will do the mod.

could you image what the levels could be like? not only really wide, but can be really tall too. Tall levels would be neat. I'd like to take a jump pad and get it to shoot me up from the ground all the way to the top really fast.
yeah, and levels 2-3 times bigger than UT! that could really be cool!

you people forget the 16 player limit?

Any ideas if the 16 player limit is being addressed by Croteam. I'm not up on the subject at all. I've not even heard a reason behind the limit in the first place. Guess it's time to start doing some digging.

It's not as bad as it sounds. *The key would be route limitations. *You can setup nice big areas between "bases", but once inside the base there would only be two or three routes to the flag. *This makes it still possible to defend the flag, but a real game of hide and seek outside.
Also note, that "inside the base" does have to be inside. *Think two hills with a flag on each hill. *The hills are steep, with lots of slippery slopes. *It can make getting up pretty hard, but once at the top, ride the slide to the bottom.

The best CTF games I have played have been 4 on 4 or 5 on 5. IMO, CTF games with more than 16 players turns into an unorganized mess and resembles DM more than CTF. I actually think the 16 player limit would benefit SS CTF.

yea 16 players is great on a ctf game, but with this talk about huge levels and stuff, like you cant make the levels far to big for 16 players to play in, thats when it becomes boring
but im talking extremes here

True, it is easy to make a map too big, but I've also played my fair share of maps that had a great idea, but the map size was too small to effectively implement it. *:(
Take for example the two hills thing that I mentioned earlier. *In most games, once at the top of the hill, the mapper would have to artifically block off the back side of the hill. *With SS you could create the back side, but just leave it completely open, so that if anyone tried to approach from that side, he'd be a sitting duck.
I'm not advocating big maps for big maps sake. *However, if a big map can improve game play, then for the love of Sam, use big maps!!!!

I know of some people who might be working on a Serious CTF...and I may be helping w/ the coding. I am d/ling the SDK now...I don't know how much freedom cro-team gave us coders, but If I decide to help w/ the Serious CTF mod, I'll see if something...even something creative can't be done, to allow more players.

good stuff snip
CTF will appear in some form in our mod...more on this later :)
(Sorry, cant give too much info about this yet, but imagine CTF with an assortment of army vehicles, jeeps, humvees etc.)

Yeah this is a great idea but the largeness of the map would have to be kept at a more Tribes sized map. Because if it gets too big then it would take a long time to get to the other side. I mean everytime you wanted the flag would you really want to walk 4 minutes before getting to the other teams flag? Although with vehicles it would work.

Well, we're doing it! Mental CTF, check the posts above. Not part of a mod, it is the Mod! We plan on doing a lot to keep the game fast! Even in huge levels. We are still just deciding what to put in it, what rules to make etc, but wee are looking for mappers/artists! We will need modelers and skinners! We will have a lot of custom textures since we do not plan on going w/ the egyption theme. We will probably have a page up by the end of the week. I am still discussing what to put on it (It won't take long, I'm just throwing it togather in FrontPage...a stray from my usual notepad.exe :D
I'll probably stay active in the forum, and maybe the other guys in on this will join, I'm not sure. Check the other CTF posts!

Notepad RULES!!!
Sorry for the rant, but most of the WYSIWYG editors give me fits. *Then again, I guess you've noticed. **twitch*
