What is the difference between a mod and a total conversion?

To be honest, I really couldn't tell ya. But, I generally get the impression Total Conversion applies more to mods that try to imcorporate characters and settings from other already-established games, such as Starcraft, or Mega Man, etc.

To me, it doesn't matter much what it's called if I like the game. :) Let the creators call it what they want, it's their vision I say.

In that case, would anyone want to work on a TOTAL conversion for SS for Gundam Wing?

And for you anime fans, I said Gundam Wing because DBZ just doesn't have enough action.  Although... the serious Engine would be cool for those large, empty battlefields.  Imagine those huge fireballs they throw whenever they fight in full 3D.  But still, GW has more action with less standing around and looking fierce, plus its weaponry is closer to that in SS.  Anyone who has seen gundam wing, think about Heavyarms and then think about the minigun.  Look similar, no?

I was under the impression that a mod simply modified the existing game. Not completely, just add or modify it. Like say, add your own creatures and levels to the existing SS levels. A Total Conversion is swiping everything Serious and starting from scratch using the base engine. New levels, new characters, new monsters, new weapons, new everything. THAT is not an easy task, but one that's rewarding if you can do it.

Planerunner got it right.
A total conversion is a mod, but a mod isn't necessarily a total conversion.
A mod could be something that just changes the rules a bit, adds a couple weapons, but essentially you're still playing the same game.
A total conversion basically creating a whole new game, so the player will see really nothing from the base game in the mod (aside from some nitpicky details, of course)
for instance, rocket arena is a mod, but counter-strike is a total coversion.

i was always under the impression that a TC changes all aspects of the game (boils down to SP and MP) and a mod only chaged one or slightly modified both

Hey y'all - there's an easy and fast wawy to make 3D Gundams (or mechs, for the Battletech/robotech fans out there). It's a japanese program (written in english) that basically gives you an anime mech chop shop; all you do is piece the thing together with the parts you want and viola! you got yer own mech. Its coooooooooooooooooooooooool!
Just type in DOGA-L1 in any search engine and it should come up (if not, try just DOGA). It's DEFINITELY worth the time if yer doin a Gundam mod. It even has the shields from teh show pre-made!! :o :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::bigg rin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Of course, most people consider TFC and Counter-Strike, FLF, DoD, as mods, and not TC's... so I'm still not sure about anyone's opinion.

I think it still boils down to what the creator wants to call it. ;)
