View Full Version : "The Hobbit" mod for SS

The last few days, I've been thinking about what would make a really good mod for SS...

The best thing about the SS engine is it's retro style, the ability to have tons of monsters on screen at once. Indeed, the best thing about the game is coop.

So why not make a coop mod where players fight horde after horde of bad dudes? What I have in mind is something reminiscint of old Atari games, wave after wave of monsters. The reward for killing all the monsters? More monsters.

I was thinking that the final scene in the book "The Hobbit", by J R R Tolkien would make a great setting for this kind of mod. You have Orcs, Dragons, Dwarves, Humans, etc all attacking a small party of guys. Perfect scenario.

Players could maybe pick which character from the book they would like to be, Gandalf the Wizard, Bilbo the Hobbit, Gimli the Dwarf etc etc. Each character can have a few unique skills, for example, the wizard could cast spells and heal, but have very little health, and no armor. The Hobbit could have stealth (he is a thief), so he'd be good at backstabbing monsters, but be poor in frontal attacks. The Dwarves could be good at fighting.

There is plenty of opportunity for a good variety of monsters. You have Smaug the Dragon, different Orcs (ones that run at you with bombs, archers, orcs riding wild boars, the boars themselves, orcs with swords), dwarven catapaults, even a few evil wizards.

You could even make a few varying scenarios, and loop to the next one when the players run out of lives. You have the last final, epic battle, the battle in the lair of the orcs, and you could borrow some of the battles from other Lortd of The rings books, like the battle against those tree people.

Sadly, I haven't the time, nor the talent to make this mod, and I won't pretend I do by proclaiming myself project leader and assigning work to others. But if you have a mod team looking for ideas, please, I'd love to see this made.

Yeah, kind of like Gauntlet on steroids! The original arcade had thousands of monsters that came from lots of generators, so you had to kill all the monsters to destroy the generators to stop the enemies from comin out! Man I could see this in four player really easy!! :o

Perhaps base it around the whole Middle Earth Realm.?
It would have alot of stories(from all the books) and alot of fun killing.
I would be interested.

I have been thinking about this since...oh...August of last year or so =D

I'm a huge fan of the books (ALL the books, not just the trilogy), and I think this could make an amazing mod. I'm thinking you could structure it as a class-based mod, with the various races each being their own class, with different abilities/weapons.

And can you imagine Moria? I'm nearly shaking just thinking about a group of 7 people in a circle, swords and axes drawn, fighting off hordes of orcs, with the occasional troll. Just when things start to slacken, an absolutely rediculous wave of orcs poors through another door, making your only option flight. The group tears down a staircase, with the beating of drums getting closer, and suddenly burst into a large open room with a Balrog guarding the exit (a bridge, naturally ;). The doors shut behind them, and things get ugly.

Geez would that be fun =)

Hmm, I'm thinking maybe I should try and organize a mod team.

If anyone is interested in working on this as a class based coop mod, why not list your skills / area of expertise, and see if we heave enough to make up the team.

I'm willing to do the mapping, and draw new environment textures. I can do that. We'd need a modeller or two (and someone who can skin them) and a programmer or two. Additional mappers are of course also welcome.

hey, i'm leading EG:BW and i used to think "i can't do this, so someone else do"

but hey, now i'm leading a mod team.

it's quite true that i have little technical skill. but teams need leaders.

i'm learning to map, and i could turn out to be some freaky talented modeler, you never know!

well, thats all i have to say...

Well before you start talking about beggining a mod, we have to decide precicly what type of game its going to be.
I personally think you should put ALOT of work into it and make it a single player TeamBased RPG.Go on wars and stuff
