Does anyone know how easy it would be to put in drivable vehicles?

I think it would be fairly easy to implement driveable vehicles in the code. You would need to look at the movingbrush code to see how it works, and code some entity to control the movement of a brush, like the func_tankcontrols from half-life. The difference would be that in the Serious Engine, moving object physics works, and in the HL engine it doesn't. ;) Anyway, I'm sure someone could code up a VehicleBrush and VehicleControls. You could have flyable vehicles too (TRIBES anyone?), perhaps armed vehicles with homing missile launchers, as there's already code for a homing projectile. At any rate, if you're worried it'll perform like the APC from cs_siege, stop worrying, cause it won't. :)

Purple Monkey Dishwasher, where have I heard that before.
Do you do 3D? Visit maxforums.org at all in the past?
If so, I'm bTk.
Or is it a quote from a film or something.

Little off-topic from the thred but...since Serious Sam has velocity damage I imagine crashing a vehical would have interesting consequences =).

I'd certainly like to see usable vehicles in sam - possibly ala tribes, but for now I'm doubling that inquity about 'Purple monkey dishwasher'.. I've heard it somewhere before.. WHERE!?!?!?
I hate it when something like that sparks off a memory.. There was a guitaur riff in starcrafts music that was driving me insane.. A week later I figured out it was the same as in 'Transformers, the movie' which I watched religiously as a kid - despite it's cheesiness, I can still hum the theme tune to this day..
WHERE IS YOUR PURPLE MONKEY FROM!?!??

hehe, ok it's from Simpsons. Do you remember the episode where the teachers go on strike? Bart goes to a a little rally on the school steps and tells someone that skinner said the teachers were going to crack any minute and when it got passed on from person to person people added purple monkey dishwasher to it (like in the telephone game).
Edited to give you a clip of it:purple monkey dishwasher (http://duffless.homestead.com/files/pmd_remark.wav)

ohh man
cars in sam is just what we need
they never really made it big in FPS (cept for tribes) cause the levels are just to small
but with SE (and tribes) cars would shine cause some people are lazy and just dont want to walk that far :)

That would be sweet. Hotwireing cars to use as weapons :) Maybe AU can get that in their levels too.

SS Grand Theft Auto
Perhaps when you get into a car... you 'become' the car, change controls, weapons, etc. Would be very fun I think.

What do you think of the NOLF bike and snowmobile? I liked them but I didn't like the turning very much with my mouse and the keyboard was worse. Maybe it would be better if I tried it with my joystick. Anyway, the NOLF bike was cool.

I wish I could tell you what I think of it.... I have the game, but I haven't gotten to them yet! I've just got so many games I haven't been able to play enough of... like that one, and Deus Ex... and some Monkey Island games... and Grim Fandango... it's just too much! (in a good way ;))

I've played a level with the snowmobile in the NOLF megamix demo.
I hated it.

It would be great to have vechiles in SS it would open up Huge variations in the modding of the game, I don't think that i will be able to sleep until i've made it work, IF anyone gets it done soon, throw a link up on this string i'd love to have a look at how you did it????

Even a practice map that we can drive vehicles around on (a track maybe) would be a great thing to play with.
something like Halo...
armored car with a 50cal on the back..drive around shooting things.
now that would kick serious ass

I think another way to do it is to model the vehicle, and had attachment polys (similar to a weapon). Now here's the tricky part, derive it from EnemyBase class, so that when player is attached, player movement controls vehicle AI. Player could 'use' door to get in and 'use' steering wheel to start and use vehicle. Might be interesting if player could 'jump' from steering wheel and 'use' door to escape a moving vehicle. Then again, I not really sure as to go about it, but this was an idea.

mmmm, I'm thinking Mad Max buggies and cars, and motorcycles for my mod, and maybe some boats and shit for the Coastal/Tropical tileset.

Me thinks that our mods vehicle coding basics are done and that tweaks and improvements are just to be added. Not sure 100% though :)

nothing to do with drivable vehicles, but couldn't you do this to make a pushable object first. Seems to me this would be more useful =)
Quite a few mods (Our mod TitanWarfare (http://www.titanwarfare.net) included) are planning on implementing drivable vehicles.
The general approach seems to be making the vehicle a parent to the player(s) and making the translation & rotation from the players action packet affect the vehicle instead of the player.

Will it look bad like in Counter-Strike, or could you have the wheels turn?

The vehicle, if it is a model, can do whatever you want, just have attachments for the wheels, steering wheel, hell, even doors if necessary.
One of the main problems you get to when this starts happening is when you have different heights of terrain, you might have wheels dissapearing into the ground..
In that sense flying vehicles are alot easier to check for (if they hit anything then they should probably crash).
Ash
Is anyone gonna do a mod where you get on your motorcycle with your gang and zoom down miles of tarmac in the desert? That would be fun as long as there's also a game too. :)
Smithboy, our vehicles will have the wheels & doors as attachements, and they will be able to rotate seperately from the vehicle (like sams feet)
Ash, you seem to forget that flying vehicles take off and land, or in other words make contact with the ground that doens't cause them to crash :)
Jwh, someone is doing something similar :)

Our mod will have Manga style mecha's which you can climb in and out of. I have requested for a site in this site to pimp our stuff thru so hopefully we shoule get a reply soon. The name of the mod is Armour Geddon. Keep an eye out y'all!!!!

I'm just about finished modelling a vehicle (pick-up truck) with opening door and tailgate. Haven't skinned it yet though. I could probably be done by Sunday. I still trying to figure out the .es script files and the rest (need C++ practice). I would love to lend its use to a mod. By the way, I think the mech idea is cool, but two or more large players moving around equally large buildings doesn't do it for me. I think if you had different sized mechs, players in vehicles, and players on foot would add more variety.

I'd like to try that vehicle out. Even if it was just a moving brush. I could put it on a set path and it would seem like you're driving it. A moving train would be a lot more realistic without any coding changes.

Creating cars is first on my list after I finish the weapons that player models. Oh man, this stuff sure does make me excited.

Did any of you guys ever play Redline? It sucked as a FPS, but, the vehicles were sweet as all holy hell. I don't know enough about code to look at it and modify it for a different engine.
But it was a game that did the vehicle and person transtion flawlessly. All this talk about cars in a FPS reminded me of it.

Something recent which DOES work is tribes 2 - six vehicles, three ground, three air, and all brilliant.

Diffirent sized mecha's along with destroyable buildings are the main features in our(Cranked Arrow Zavtra (http://zavtra.freewebspace.com/)) mod.

I never said the vehicles didn't work, I just said that the FPS part of the game sucked ass. I mean, if you were out of the vehicle in the middle of a car fight, you were pretty much dead.

Fluffo, here's a quote from the best vehicle shooter ever made:
"NEVER...get out of the car." -Skeeter, Interstate '76
Speaking of i76...you guys who are making vehicles in your mod, don't forget to have space to drive/fly around in. Though with this game's engine I doubt that's a problem :)
