Here's my first attempt at skinning Chimera's excellent Mac-10 model:

you need to add more details
this is an excellent way to start a skin, but it's not by far finished
go out and research mac10s
get hella pictures of em

I think the model is pretty nice. It could use a little more detail though. Better than anything I could ever do.

The skin looks pretty good. If you need some good reference for skinning models, I suggest you take a look at Croteam's skins, and perhaps Counter-Strikes. The way they make the models look scratchy and abuse really gives a feel to the mod and the weapon.

Look promising ...
My advice :
Draw in grayscale (don't use the photos --- DRAW !) and then make a layer above that and set it to overlay (photoshop)
and past on it a good metal texture(photo of some
metal part or something ) that will give it that metal
feel (check out our guns).
You'll need a little prctice with that style of making skins
but it is the best way to make metal stuff.
Keep doin' good stuff !

I agree with Dinko.
The idea behind skins, specially technic stuff, like guns, is to express the geometry harder. Meaning, highlight the edges, darken the parts below (I generaly use lightsource from above), and if you have parts that stick out, draw their shadows subtly on the rest if the model.
As Dinko said, fill it with textures to get rich feeling of the material.
RatBoy noticed the scrathes. They add to the variatio of the surface, alowing you to show paint falling off etc.
Looks good for a first attempt.
You should have NO light source in a skin. You should just skin the model the best you can... make dips and bends in the model darker. Use dodge and burn tools often, but not to hard. Opasity of like 20% at the most. learning detail and such is soemthing you have to learn on your own, look at good/great skins for detail and such. You dont need tuts, once you get to a sertain point you can look at other skins and just know how they did some things. Good luck, and get beter models too, that mac 10 needs serious work.
