Backups are completely useless if they are kept on the same storage device, it protects you from software-related data corruption sure but that's about it. Judging by the age of the disk I guess it was already on its way out and it wouldn't have changed much whether you experienced outages or not.

There is no such thing as reliable data storage, so always assume the worst and have good data redundancy. Your disks could die after 1 month of usage or 1 decade, only time can tell.
