Default Why do pills and armor shards trigger so many traps in this game?

I was wondering that.

If the game like that was done years later, those trap pills and shards would have been replaced by some kind of collectible for completionists for extra challenge.

Were those +1 hp and armor things originally meant to permanently increase player's health and armor by one instead of being standard health pickups as they are now?

Or were there other reasons?
