Default Retire in Croatia

This is from an article about retirement overseas on yahoo.com
They neglected to mention Cro-team or Serious Sam. 8-(

15. Croatia. Croatia, a country with an extraordinarily complicated history and an extremely open-minded, forward-looking population, is at another turning point in its long history. Countries at turning points are interesting places to be. I recommend the country's Istrian Peninsula, which serves up some of the most delightful scenery on the planet. The land seems to rise up to embrace you, and everywhere you look, something nice is growing like olives, grapes, figs, tomatoes, pumpkins, blackberries, and wildflowers. Even the buildings seem to be part of the earth, built of its white stone and red clay. This sun-soaked region offers one of the most appealing lifestyle options in Europe today.

Multiply that by 1000 and it will be true.

This one is true. Istria is like a country in a country. The influence of Italy and Austro-Hungarian Empire was strongest there, which can be seen through architecture and lifestyle. People there really are more open-minded and forward-looking than in the most parts of the country. I went there on a holiday few years ago, and I wish I didn't return home.

There are, of course, plenty of other nice places and great people, but Istria is Istria.

Istria's been passing from one ruler to another since the roman empire went down. Of course the people there are forward-looking--stuff changes too often for them to commit!

It's not just Istria, the whole country did.

We are here since 7th century. From 1100s til 1990s we were ruled or invaded by Hungary, Habsburg Monarchy(aka Austria), Italy, Venice, Otoman Empire(aka Turkey), France, Fascist Italy, Germany and Serbia.

During some periods the country was even split to several parts having different rulers.

Now you need to worry about being invaded by the blue hairs.

I was in Ičići (north-east in Istria) on vacation a few years ago. Beautiful place, nice people. Would definitely go there again. The only disappointment was accidentally kicking a sea urchin while snorkeling. Spiny ****ers. Good thing there was an Austrian doctor on the beach with a little emergency set. He got most of the pins out with some tweezers, while I was hitting on his daughter to keep my mind off the bleeding.

Hey hey hey! America invented pizza after troops came back from WW2.
The Italians made it all weird with the whole grain square loaf, fermented picciloa meat and goat cheeses, we fixed it for the world. No need to thank us.

Your whole post is a lie.

That's a fact.

A facty fact.

Meat on charcoal.

Which part of the barbeque is actually an american expertise? Cooking the meat or putting alight the charcoal?

An exquisite fire perhaps?

Personally I like Mexican, French, Italian, German, Chinese ...
Pretty much any style. There a very few examples of "pure" cuisine. For example the tomatoes in your pasta sauce is from South America as is the corn in polenta (which we tend to call grits in the south). Almost all of the cultures that came to America brought their own foods with them. The same is true of almost every country. They have incorporated food brought by visitors and conquerors and of course conquered.

We don't have any of our own foods, but you can go ahead and associate anything unhealthy with us like the rest of the world.

Pizza is astonishingly common. If a plate was required I don't think it would be nearly as popular.
America made the handheld kind of pizza iirc.

Speaking of gastronomy, no tourist ever complained about food here.

One of the weirdest local gastronomic specialty is s "rock soup". Basically a chef picks up a rock from the sea and boils it in water to make soup. The rock needs to be covered with sea shells or some other eatable sea stuff to make it more tasty... weird.

Wow I remember that story about rock soup from when I was a kid.

That blew my mind that it's real. I wonder if Jesus is real too?
