Default UDK - Yakushi-ji Temple

Ok, so i decided to finally start a map. I'll be using UDK, since i'm kinda find it easier to work with then Sed, but i hope you don't mind if i still post stuff here.

This will be relatively small map, not really playble but more like tech demo if you will, as i really plan to use this as a portfolio.

Also, sorry for opening new thread and not posting in my other thread here..this is very important map to me and i'd really like to have thread specifically just for this map. I'll try to explain a lot what i do, so maybe someone can find some usefull info here, who knows.

Anyhow, i'll be starting with creating few ground texture first. I'll start with stone blocks. I plan to have two different stone block ground.

The process i plan to use is create basic single brick mesh in maya, then use zbrush to use this as base and sculpt several pieces of blocks, to avoid too much tiling, and then arrange them together into square, and then take normal, color and AO map out of zbrush. Then i'll use photoshop to finish all those textures.

So, now that this wall of text is done, here are first four blocks i sculpted in zbrush (not final version yet):

cheers...

WOW. BRICKS. AWESOME.

But yeah, they are actually good looking. And it really goes everything in a showcase, so I think it is okay.

That's an interesting looking style you got there. Is this going to be a kind of cartoony art styled map?

Oh wow, Solais complimented something.

well it will be kind more of a realistic style with a bit of a cartoonish if that makes any sense.

Semi-realism, perhaps?

lets say so, but a i'm leaning a bit more towards realism....it won't have cartoon shader or anything like that...but certain feature may be exaggerated....i'm not yet 100% sure how exactly will turns out at the end, we'll see..

tnx for comment!

Also, this is the basic reference i use:
http://i.imgur.com/01TLw.jpg

I'll make those two types of stone textures....

I'm also thinking if i should try to aim for the weather and mood from this image, meaning hazy, rainy and cloudy, or something more...summer like...

Well, a good start at least Wish you best luck.

Aren't the bricks too regular for a map? They look more like a bathroom after good party than brick wall or something.

With the speed of 2 bricks per day I'm sure you'll have something finished soon.

Take a look at these:
http://i.imgur.com/01TLw.jpg

As you see, they are very regular as you say. Still, this is just wip, but this is basically what i am aiming for.

Discy, quality over quantity. I was just watching some other artists who create a map, which is totaly awesome but, it took him like 8 moths or so...if i make half as good as he did in that time, i'm totally fine with it.
As i said, this is going to be for portfolio, so i'm not rushing this...

Tnx all for comment.

I know, pal, I'm just pulling your leg. I'm certain that however this turns out it will be A-grade.

Yeah i know, but if this was for a job, i would probably take it far less time, but it is true that i work maybe 2 hours per day on this map. You have to cut corners all the time wich results in very fast creation of map, but it doesn't look as good.
So that's why when artst wants to make portfolio piece, usually they take as much time as they need, because if you want to lend a job, even one good piece like can do wonders....

They look like pretty rough stone tiles to me. Looking at Zocky's reference picture, he's made them even rougher than they are in the real world. If your bathroom tiles look like that, you've got some serious issues. Keep in mind this is only a 3D sculpture so far. It has no textures yet to make it look like stone, only the shape is there right now.

Looks good Zocky, I'll be keeping my eye on this.

For me, the tiles in the picture still look like worn concrete floor, not stone by any means. I've been looking at similiar ones for a good part of my life, but can be still wrong.

Anyway, why we are discussing something like a six square tiles ?

well, without a texture, if you check my reference, you will see it doesn't look too different from it.

On that picture , for the most part, those stone blocks on the ground look very clean, very flat, and without the texture, it would look relatively similar to the one you are refering to.

Still, warmonger, if you don't mind, in your opinion, what do you think would make those tiles look more like those stone on my reference?

I'm just a little confused here because i even tried to over do with the damage and stuff because reference looks a tad to clean, yet you say it's still far from looking like a stone...i searched many old chinese arcitecture, and in most cases the ground are very clean, very "grid alligned"and overall very smooth...

Wouldn't it be relatively easy to switch between the two? You can get all the assets going and start building the level, then try both atmospheres out and see which one stands out to you. I'm more partial to moody atmospheres, so if it were me I would probably go with rainy/cloudy.

It's kind of funny how there's a sudden surge of UDK related stuff on the forum. I'm going to spend the rest of the night working on a small map for my environment art class. It won't be anything special since I just started with UDK a week ago, but it should be fun.

Heh well, when i check the references, with rainy or cloudy mood (which i'm leaning towards it), you need water puddles on the ground, different skydome, different lighting, then there is this ground clouds/fog that you see in hills after the heavy rain for example and alot of other stuff i'm thinking of using, if i go for that mood.

Also yeah, looks like udk became popular here lately...Looking foward to see what you can do with udk!

I think the tiles that are broken in half are too obviously repeated. You have two different tiles that are broken in half but they're broken in very similar ways, which makes it that much worse. I think it might look better if none of them were completely broken like that, or if they are, then very few of them.

Still looks amazing, though.

Edit: The repetition in the half-broken tiles might be less noticeable when there's a dirt texture or something under them. The black background just really makes them stick out in that shot.

Yeah i'll reduce number of those tiles + as you said, when i put dirt below stone, it should be a bit less repetative. tnx!

Much nicer with gloss effect, stones should have these.

With this tempo, we will see entire floor in another 2 days!

Well i do hope to entirely finish this texture by tomorrow night...I have 1 or 2 extra texture that i plan to do, to have 3 ground texture in total, which should be enough for now, and then move to modelling first building...

tnx for comment!
