Default Mod Help v1.0

Hey all!

Ive been putting together a little project creating a help file to aid all the people out there wanting to create a mod of their own for Serious Sam: The Second Encounter and this is what it comes down to right now. Its a work in progress and more things will be added later on in the future like tutorials, Serious Info etc.

For now I have added the following things:

- Setting up the mod folder
- Setting up Visual C++
- Making texture files

Well, you are all welcome to download the file, its at 660 Kb and zipped.

Download here

Check it out and feedback is very welcome

Hey, I'm in the credits

That's some great work. I like things like this packed in a nice help file. It's just great.

I just want to point out one spelling mistake that can be fixed if you create a new version. Under Setting up the mod folder -> Creating the files, there is a file that reads:

"These files will contain listing of what your mod is aloud to do."

but it should be:

"These files will contain listing of what your mod is allowed to do."

Also I am concerned with the part on the .lst files. It would be nice to note that if the mod decides to have it's own controls or other files, that it does not overwrite the base controls. Pro-Pain was a real pain with that.

Another spelling mistake:

"Now you have an empty workspace open in Visual C++. Click Project -> Insert Project into Workspace... and add the EntitiesMP.dsp file found in the C:\MyMod\Sources\EntitesMP folder."

Should be Entities

Geat, thanks for pointing them out Smithboy, I will just change the zip on my site without anyone noticing

The reason you was in the creds was because I tokk some info from your modtutorial, it was great btw, thats what got me started

About the controls, I'll change that as well then, good point!

That's great... but I can't get to the file....

If it's no longer available where Json put it, does someone else have it available somewhere?

I followed the steps but I get an error when compiling:

Quote:

EntitiesMP/WorldSettingsController.es
ecc is not an internal command, external command,
program eller commandfile.
Error executing c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe.

GameGUIMPD.dll - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s)
any idea why?

if you want the file I can send it to you, just get me on aim or icq

[EDIT] Nevermind, I had misunderstood a line

hmm.. on the other hand, I now get another error...

Quote:

Compiling...

if you're going to use absolute paths kill the $( and ) but leave the path there

then it'll build, but depending on your OS 95,98 or 2K,XP it will or won't copy across. If you're on 2k or XP you'll need to use the shortend versions of the directories

Seriou~1 etc

or you could set up an environment variable like that, if win2k or xp right click on my computer, properties, its in there somewhere i can't remember the exact location

if 98 or 95, in your autoexec.bat type in a line that goes

SET ENGINE_DIR=C:\SS

or woteva your path may be and NO SPACES

Default Miscellaneous Starf

Firstly to the guy who was having a problem with ecc... check to make sure that $(ENGINE_DIR)/Bin is in your Executable Directories (Tools -> Options -> Directories) and that $(ENGINE_DIR) is set (that'll depend on your OS.. in win2k look at system
properties otherwise autoexec.bat is where you'll probably set it)

Otherwise.. I've got an optional modification to the installing SDK process described.

It's been acknowledged by many that the MOD system is excellently coded for separating mod stuff and base stuff.. so it makes sense to use that not just for distributing the mod but for coding and debugging as well.

The changes are simple and as follows (throughout all of this i shall refer to $(ENGINE_DIR).. This in all references shall refer to the directory that ss:se is installed in (i.e. c:\program files\Serious Sam 2 or whatever) I'll also talk about $(SOURCE_DIR) which is where the source directories will be) :-

- Unzip the Debug Binaries zip to $(ENGINE_DIR)\Bin\Debug (This only ever needs to be done the first time)
- Unzip the other three to $(SOURCE_DIR)
- Create the workspace as per the standard process however note that the sources directory can be ANYWHERE.
- In the Custom Build section change $(ENGINE_DIR)\Bin to $(ENGINE_DIR)\Mods\<ModName>\Bin and \Bin\Debug in the same way.
- In the Directories tab all references to Bin should be to $(ENGINE_DIR)/Bin and all references to Sources should be to ($SOURCE_DIR)

As an added extra.. in the Settings Dialog under the Debug tab, General Category add "$(ENGINE_DIR)/Bin/SeriousSam.exe" (/Bin/Debug/SeriousSam.exe for Debug Projects) under Executable and "+game <modname>" under program arguments.

Note that i'm definately not an expert at this.. so there could be some hidden gotcha's i haven't found yet.. but its worked fine so far. (and it means i don't need 2 installs of Serious Sam 2 )

It also has the advantage of when it comes time to package, delete Bin/Debug, zip up the mod directory and rename to .gro. voila.. instant mod package.

BTW Checking over the original to see if i missed anything i'm not sure if you'll need to copy Engine.lib and EngineGUI.lib anywhere.. check to see if $(ENGINE_DIR)/Bin has them already.. if it doesn't put them in there otherwise don't (Debug should be capable of dealing with itself)

OH and if you're planning on adding a trouble shooting part.. i've got two items to put in that..

If VC6 has syntax errors in an es (in particular i've seen something similar to "unknown feature: 'IsImportant'") then make sure that $(ENGINE_DIR)/Bin is first in your execution dir list.

also

if VC6 mentions it can't find d3d8.h.. install the Directx 8 headers (link is wandering about somewhere on the forum)

Hey btw.. i've had another thought.. could you cram into the Help File all of the other mod type stuff in SmithBoy's MOD tutorial? like the background (all tho thats slightly different for SS2..it's in a different c file tho i can't remember which one off hand) and Pointer mods.

Oh and just in response to Shrekel's edit.. you need to install the DirectX 8 Header files. I'm not quite sure where they are but there is a link somewhere in the forums

Somewhere in your project settings the paths are wrong, it cant locate the file to copy. Look at the paths in project settings, custom build again.

And YES I will continue on the file to make it include the background image code and other interesting stuff

Keep adding suggestions!

Default Ok, here we go...

I want you all to send me your tutorials on coding, mapping, modelling and all other stuff concerning Serious Sam, ie: Making new fonts, making textures etc...

All the tutorials sent to me will be included in the Mod Help file and your name/nick will be included in the Credits.

So if you got a tutorial you made please send it to me at: json@najt.nu

And please zip it if there are more files than one.

Thanks!

Well, I have currently added a tutorials section and I got one tutorial in in it. The tutorials section will be featuring General- , Modelling- , Mapping- and Coding tutorials.

Im also gonna add some small stuff for this next version like how to make fonts for your mod and stuff like background picture for the loading screen. Stuff like that

Next version is 1.1 and it will come out shortly. If any of you guys out there have any tutorials that you might want to put in the ModHelp file, just mail em to me.

You have to create your own .tga files using Paintshop Pro or Photoshop or IrfanView etc.

And i think that tutorial is for both SE and FE

Kakaroto, please try to avoid ressurecting rather old threads in future, and make a new one for such a question instead. Also you need some patience, it won't help bugging us by asking the same stuff everywhere.

You should focus on one thing at a time and not try doing everything at once, as this is a guarantee of failing.

Could I borrow that thing in the tutorial you let us all download, the scoreboard. Because I just can't get it to compile, it comes up with lots of errors. Could I borrow the scoreboard please? I really want to use it for my (Buzzy v1.1 mod in Multiplayer)
