Default Playable demo of XIII is out with the map editor!

w00t! This is pretty cool.. http://www.mapxiii.com/ is hosting this playable demo

"XIII is a unique first-person shooter (FPS) game that creates a completely interactive graphic novel within a cel-shaded world. XIII is based on the comic license of the same name from Belgium comic book author, Jean Van Hamme, and the game will be powered with next-generation Unreal Engine technology. XIII is the first FPS to utilize cel-shaded graphics to create a visually stunning effect unique within the action genre. The next-generation animation and Unreal Engine technology combine to illustrate XIII's complex and immersive story. XIII features a conspiracy of epic proportions, and players will unravel clues behind the story's compelling and mysterious events through the game's unique flashback visuals. "

Actually, that's not true about "the first FPS to utilize cel-shaded graphics" unless you don't count Buzzybots.

Screenshots of XIII can be found here.

Playable demo is about 40 megs

http://www.mapxiii.com/editmap/XIII_NES_200802.zip

d/l it, unzip to temp directory then run xiii.exe, press escape, and pick "charger map" from main menu, then load the "DM_Pal.unr" map then you are in the game and playing!..

Most of the menus and stuff is in French, and my French is a little rusty, but it's easy to figure out.

General protection fault!

History: UD3DRenderDevice::SetRes <- UWindowsViewport::TryRenderDevice <- UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

Yeah, but the game doesn't load - I just get that error. Can't get ingame to change it to openGL, unless i can figure out how to properly edit the .ini files.

ok, that sucked an unbeleivable amount of crap.

1) I couldn't set my controls
2) It had the WASD set up, except W did NOTHING. There was no way to move forward, I had to strafe around the map.
3) Mouse was not inverted
4) Mouse sensitivity was way down
5) I could not switch weapons

1) apparantly you have to edit the DefUser.ini file to change your controls
2) W is set for walk.. use arrow keys or edit the ini file
3) I think you change "bInverseLook=True" in the ini file
4) again it's in the ini file.
5) guess what? Default is "slash"

They released the editor a few weeks ago so mappers could learn the ins and outs of the new editor. Mappers went nuts on this, and you can expect to see tons of UT2003 maps once UT2003 is out. The maps made with the XIII editor won't work with UT2003, but the editor may as well be the same. It's all for the learning.

Don't worry, I have a plan. I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around the city, keeping it's speed over 50, and if it's speed dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down".

Because it's something different/original. I think that as game approach and even achieve "perfect" realism, they'll begin moving away from it again, towards creativity.

Actually cel shading is great. it depends on the game, though. Stuff like XIII or Dragon's Lair are great for Cel shading engines, but other games aren't. Heh imaginge if they did somethign like Resident Evil or GTA3 all Cel shaded.. it would look kinda weird.

IMHO the whole industry is suffering form this whole "realism" fad. FPS at least.
None wants to innovate or be creative because realism almost guarentees a hit.
If things keep goin this way Gaming will end up like hollywood filmaking. Every good idea will be stripped down and suplimented with crap to please the masses. The quality will stay at a decent level but no games will be at all memorable.

I could imagine gta3 with cel-shading.
But for mafia that would suck.

Yeah, I posted on the Buzzybots forums a couple of times to move to the Serious Engine because it's better.

Like check this thread out thier forums http://www.buzzybots.dk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=797

They want to try to make that map with the the HL engine.. LOL
Serous Engine is the only FPS engine out that I know of that can do maps like that with multidurectional gravity.
