Exclamation HD Issues

So, I have two hard drives, and the second, non-system one, occasionally vanishes when I turn on my PC and reappears on restart. So I downloaded a S.M.A.R.T. program to check it out and got this. How worried should I be?

Welcome to the bad sector hell. From the looks of it, You've got a "spot" on the drive and as it spins, it's only going to spread.
I'd suggest backing up any important data from this hard drive IMMEDIATELY as it's only going to get worse, to the point of the drive becoming unusable.
Oh and irrecoverable data damage is already happening right now, from the looks of it, at least5k of data is already definitely lost and some at least 265k is "maybe lost". Over time the amounts of 'definitely lost" and "maybe lost" are going to increase. The increase goes near exponentially, btw. The more sectors get fugged and the spot[s] grow the faster new ones appear.

BTW I say "at least" there because the drive can only detect ded'd and dying sectors once it tries to read/write them. There might be a lot more fugged up that You simply haven't touched since then.

Either way, backup anything important RIGHT NOW and replace the drive.

At least it's your secondary porn drive.

The raw data indicates there's 10 bad sectors. If you keep using it make sure to run the tool from time to time to keep an eye on the increase. Also if you're going to keep using it make sure to keep non-pertinent data on it.

There's a lot of essential data on it, the other drive is much smaller and can't contain it. It's funny, cause I was actually thinking the other drive will die sooner, due to being older. I do have a large amount of the data already backed up to an external drive though. What annoys me is that the rest isn't really classified so I'll have to dig through for anything that's important and that I should save. Tedious. Was hoping it didn't come to this.

That's why you take the extra time to set up an efficient file sorting method.

One important suggestions: until You can get where to store that data, disconnect the drive.
i.e. avoid spinning the platters as much as possible, as spinning gradually grows the damaged spot.

"suddenly" usually only happens when it reaches a point when the damaged spot grows YUUUGE, increasing the rate of spread accordingly.

My primary hard disk has had one bad sector for months now. It holds my OS, music and games with automated frequent backups of important stuff so everything's pretty replaceable should the damage spread. But I'm keeping my eye on it.

A single bad sector is often nothing. The situation in Deviantel case looks a lot more serious.
And as I said, it's likely there's a lot more bad sectors, just no discovered yet.

What the fuck? It was at 27 uncorrectable sectors the day before.

Uncorrectable Sector Count is the amount of bad sectors the OS can identify, which is dangerous. Usually when the disk encounters these it tries to remap these sectors so they're completely off-limits to the OS: Data can't be written to it, preventing data corruption and removing part of the risk. But these bad sectors are still there and they can impact performance and will likely still degrade the disk over time. Reallocation Event Count is the amount of bad sectors that have been remapped, which is at 0 because the disk is still working on these. That's why Current Pending Sector Count is still high and Uncorrectable Sector Count decreased.

In short: The total amount bad sectors is Uncorrectable Sector Count plus Reallocation Event Count values. If both these values keep increasing (when the Pending Sector Count is low, otherwise it's still processing a lot) prepare for drive failure. Optimally the disk will process the 533 pending sectors, remap (retire) the bad sectors, the Current Pending Sector Count and Uncorrectable Sector Count will decrease and the Reallocation Sector Count will increase.

Edit: Actually, I got it mixed up: C4 Reallocation Event Count means the amount of times the drive has attempted to move data from a bad sector due to remapping, successful or not. The property I was thinking of is 05 Reallocated Sectors Count. That's the amount of bad sectors that have been found and remapped.

one question that seem to have slipped through unasked:
Have You ran any disk checking software to do a HDD-wide bad sector check?
(chkdsk doesn't cut it, keep that in mind)

Running something like that can actually accelerate the drive failure. You need to find some way to save the data. Until then unplug the drive. You might only have one shot at recovery.

Deviantel, let me reiterate: I was asking whether You have or not and pointing out that chkdsk doesn't count
But judging from Your response, You haven't.
And okay...

Yeah, well, I suggested those before, but Deviantel doesn't seem to be following those, so personally, I am not sure what else to suggest.
Time to brainstorm, I guess.

But you don't understand! My Hard Drive is my life! There's things there that I need on a daily basis, or I will suffer dire consequences and my world will implode!

On a more serious note, yes, I get what you're saying. I have backed up most of my important data onto an external drive, and waiting to see what happens. I can't unplug the drive cause it still has a lot of stuff that I am using on it, and the other drive is too small to contain it. In all honesty, if it's gonna go to hell, it might as well do so, as long as I save my data from being lost forever, which I have made sure of about 90%. I was just confused with how it is possible that bad sectors go from 27 to what is now 7, not arguing with anything that's been suggested to me thus far. And also asked whether there is software that can help me out, or is it a Titanic kind of situation.

I am getting my first salary from my new job soon, and I will use some of the money to buy a new HD.

There is no software that can prevent disk degradation now that it has started. Back up your important data and await the whims of your corrupt disk overlord. How far is it now anyway, have the pending sectors cleared?

I should point out that it might happen that your disk can't process the pending sectors and they just keep building up. That's just as bad.
