Fortress is not a good duel map.. I mentioned it before - the spawners are flawed.

The map in general IS a good map. Spawn points are the only leak there, but that can be solved with 2 clicks: one for selecting the spawn point entity, the other to move the entity in one of the directions.

Spawn points should just be moved a little bit in a way that who spawns is not too exposed.

Yes of course, but as it is in the game right now - it's not good. When the spawners are fixed, it'll be a good map.

That process should be done in Serious Sam 4, in case there were the chance to see the map reimplemented.

You just use one value and set it to 0 or -1 to disable No need for a boolean and an integer value.

I totally disagree about Fortress.

That's not a good 1on1 map, it may be a good Deathmatch map WITH fixed spawn points, but I do not suggest Fortress-like map design for 1on1 maps.

1on1 maps should be more like The Lost Tomb, little more complex than Royal Purgatory, and far better than Medieval Rage or Sun Palace (which are too unbalanced with camping areas or so heavy pickups).
Also Hole has too many problems, first of all there are too few paths for a big and 3D map, it is a continuous competition to see who rises upwards (to the armor and the heart) and it's not so much dynamic.

Never create Duel maps similar to Fortress, Skull and Bones, because they are so big and they have horrible paths which are not compatible with a good 1on1 match.

Actually, I think there are some SS3 maps that are salvageable, but maybe like 1 or 2.

Btw, what do you think about Hoodlum's Backyard?

As Angelo said,
1) the map is too small and there aren't so many paths and zones to control. There is no way to play it as a DM or a Duel, because in fact the map is so little and narrow. Just watch how Lost Tomb is built, or spend some hours on Unreal Tournament and you will fully understand my opinion

2) the map is symmetrical, and I really don't like stymmetrical maps because they are so boring, repetitive and copy-paste...

3) ...except when the map is a Capture the Flag. I renew my first post, watch my mod and the CTF addon pack. There's a version of Hoodlum's Backyard Capture the Flag (called The Cage) which in my opinion is very funny.

If you create everything yourself, including textures, music, etc or get permission to use them (free licenses, permission, etc). This falls under fair use, I believe, but if you want to go commercial then you can't make an exact replica. Modify it in some ways that make it more unique while still having the gameplay you want.

The perfect 1on1 map and also fun even for more players. Best for duel IMO is Little Trouble.

BTW in the classics era the best map was Red Station. Why this map was abandoned?

You have to understand the difference between classic and HD. HD is much faster and you have a lot more freedom of control.

Personally, I see LT as a good map for classic 1v1 (and 2v2), and TLT a good map for HD 1v1 (definitely not more players). LT in HD is good as well, but it's better in classic. LT ended up being a surprisingly good (and fun) CTF map.

Red Station would be a fun HD map, but it has some inconsistent sizing things - there's the giant open space, 2 big closed buildings, and then the medium-sized underground with the super narrow hallways. I always found the underground hallways kinda weird. Perhaps that could be replaced for a re-do.

Also, the cannon was OP in classic, but even more OP in HD

I'm guessing some maps for SSHD weren't recreated because lack of time to create unique assets. Not that it will stop me.

I'm not agree with game speed, classic feels much more "free" and "fast". I mean those slope-accelerated jumps, double jumps on bouncers, the common speed feels decreased a little bit...

On classics you can't quickly get on a ledge by jumping into the side (technically you can, but it slows you down a lot, on HD you lose nothing). Also, learn to strafejump.

With some work it could be a nice map for DMs only, not for duels.

The point is that you can do whatever (or almost) you want AS LONG AS the game has other to offer.

If you make a game with only 10 maps (*coff coff* Serious Sam HD *coff coff*) and put the Cannon in 4 maps, of course the game design is totally a crap.

Instead, if you give the players a large ammount of choises, everything automatically becomes more flexible and you can afford some "crazy" things like a completely unbalanced Cannon in a map

I've been saying for years the deathmatch aspect of the game needs toggles for weapon and powerup availability per weapon and powerup, because everybody has different tastes, and then Croteam can put anything in their deathmatch maps and people can remove what they don't want to play with. But that's just me.

Well I like to play competitive arena shooters, but I'm not that kind of die-hard-hardcore-gamer "this weapon's damage should be reduced by 1, and this weapon firerate - increase with 0.1". I agree the game must have more custom settings.
