I am rather curious what your system specs are. You mind telling us?

That will depend on what graphics API the engine will use, if it is DX10, god help the X1900/7900 GTX.

DX10 is also backwards compatible, it's bs not to implement fallback modes these days, as it excludes quite a number of users (look at Oblivions first release, had to be hacked in by a few fans).

I thought DX10 wasn't backwards compatible...
But you are right, it'd be stupid not to have DX9 support.

Slawww, they could also just buy a premade game and sell it as their own game, this way there would be verry little bugs.
they spent so much time on engine so you people can get maximun out of it and also to make all that editor, and you guys are still complaing, tsk tsk.
where would we get if everybody would use premade engine? Somebody also have to develope it.

But what is the point of making a new engine when another one is out there and suits the requirements of the game perfectly? It is cheaper to buy a license than programming a new one from scratch.

But I admit that for a game like SS; no engine that I know of can handle such enemy amounts other than Croteam's home-cooked engines.

I don't think you can argue with that.

It means wood particles will come off the model when you shoot at it with a weapon and the sounds of your footsteps are different so you sound like you're walking on wood

No.
In this context, it's all about how it looks... especially from different angles.

Am I the only one who remembers all the stuff that got cut from the Ss2 tech demo?
I wouldn't get too excited about it until you install the full game and see it running for yourself. I fully expect half of that to be gone by release. Nothing against Croteam specifically, just that game devs always think they can promise the moon, even though they should know by now that they can never deliver it all...

I can't remember anything that got cut from the SE2 demo... maybe you can refresh my memory?

And how does that have anything to do with technology? It's called a tech demo for a reason, it's about showing off the technology.

There was also a Jetski (The first SS2 image shown) but that's easily done with a hovercraft vehicle remodel with the strafing controls turned off

You know... they claimed that they'll include every feature any game ever had, but missed some really important ones from the previous engine

We need to keep this thread focused on the graphics and physics engine of SS3.

All other (and, let's face it, interesting suggestions ) should be put in the SS3 suggestions thread.

Physics, for one. And that was a major focus of the video. Completely gone. A lot of this sounds like similar graphics stuff, the water physics, for example. Sounds like exactly the same stuff again.
I'm just trying to keep thing in perspective, because it sounds like we're setting ourselves up for the same thing that happened with SS2, they mention the possibility of all this stuff, we think they've promised it to us, and then when things get cut for whatever, maybe fully justified reasons, the community whines and complains for ages afterward.
I'm sure we've got that list of stuff that was cut from SS2 around here somewhere. I'm just here to say, read that, condense it into a grain of salt, and take it before continuing with the thread.

I don't recall they ever mentioned water physics or any of the stuff mentioned for SEngine 3.0. Even if they did, it is more likely they'll put it in this time since PCs are constantly getting more and more powerful.

Hey, you ever played SS2? That has physics. All it doesn't have is physics sound effects. But, remember that the SS2 videos came almost right before the game's release. For all we know, Croteam does not even have a level plan for SS3, and look how much they have done with SS3 already. SO I think we should keep our hopes up, and applaud Croteam for being good!

There are physics in SS2, can't you even enable ragdoll physics with a console command?

When you do that, the larger models turn into a mess of separate cylinders that roll independantly of each other and look horrible.
And Unreal had better crate physics, at least you could manipulate them successfully. The crate physics are completely unusable, have you tried to stack anything in SS2? I'd rather have pseudo-physics from older games than the frictionless, weightless what-the that's in now.

As far as water physics, I was referring to the wakes and the proper raindrop management. I'm not sure if that's referring to little wake models and raindrop spirites, but since those're old hat I figured they had some kind of cool water physics going, which I'll be looking forward to once I have a reason to believe it'll actuially be there.

I love SS2, and any look back through my post history will show I've been a strong supporter of it, but the physics are pretty much unusable. I'm just waiting to see what the final game will be like. If anything, I'm trying to avoid the over-hype, disapointment cycle that has happened so many times before for so many games. Like I said, all devs promise more stuff than they can deliver, I'm just being a devil's advocate of sorts, trying to keep it all in perspective.

The video made it quite clear that they add it to the engine, why would they spend time programming those if they wouldn't implement them?

as I said, this is still very early, or at least in the middle of the SS3-creation process, so they still have time to polish it
