?

My point was that they first show real (edited) video footage right before actual gameplay footage, which is stupid because their gameplay footage clearly looks bad even if they tried to make it super pretty.

Edit: Gnaarwarian deleted his post, rendering this post useless. Rofl.

I'd like bright, but not cartoonish art style.

So, is it still a question on Art-Style or Tone of the game?

With art-style, maybe a mixture of Sam 3's Steam Cards outlined stuff and SS1's enemy styles and colors. Tone would actually sort of be a mixture of 1's enemy variations and 3's enemy list.

The realistic style looks great, the colour scheme was just less than unispirational. The Egypt was quite colourless, that's why I really liked SSHD:TSE, because of all its colour and things.

The "wacky fantasy" in Serious Sam 2 was great! In fact, believe it or not, SS2 is my favorite game in the series. It felt a lot like Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

"Next Encounter" wasn't so good though imho.

Huh, I kinda think the same about TSE. I think it fits H2G2 a lot better, because those books are not overly silly like SSII, they are silly of course, but there's a more... refined kind of silliness about it. I guess it's like that because it is British.

That i agree if the next Serious Sam game has the realistic graphics i hope it takes place somewhere more greener and prettier.

Reality sucks.
Those epic lovely coutryards are IRL just dusty, imperfect, buildings that suffer of a sweaty climate that honestly isn't fun at all. The benefit of SSHD:FE was that it took temperatures and rough traits out, and left us to explore seemingly picture perfect deserts & temples. They made desert look attractive.
I'm in favour of serious fantasy - vast, dramatic open spaces with epic scenery that make the player feel as tiny as he really is (Courtyards of Gilgamesh was my cup of tea )

Actually, on the other hand I admit I did very much enjoy BFE's take on harsh, ruined dusty Egypt.
I guess I'd gladly take either of those two approaches then :-)

If 'Wacky Reality' means something like SSHD/Talos, then I'd like to see that. Even though I don't really like SSHD. I have a feeling that it lacks something, compared to Classic, which was artistically more vibrant and rich. Probably because all of the textures and models were mostly hand-made back in 2001/2002. It's a little bit sad that Croteam decided to go with photorealism. Now, they are producing assets using photogrammetry and photoscanning; it's cheaper, but I feel like their games became less unique and hand-crafted. You start noticing that their games are made by programmers mostly, so that's why they are relying on HD-textures and nice graphics effects to hide it. Croteam really need more artists and designers. As well as modellers and animators, but that's another story.

On the other hand, though, The Talos Principle was looking pretty nice, at least better than SS3, more colorful (though some levels still suffer from the greyish\yellowish tones, even if that was made on purpose). So if they're going with this art-style in SS4 - it's even better. But once again, it's not just the art-style that matters. It's the design. Combination of various visual elements, right placement, memorable design, clever layout and waypoint.

Well, when Talos came along, CT got a few new modelers, including one very talented one: All those awesome cliffs in A4, A7, C3 and similar, is by this person. In Gehenna, two levels are made entirely by him. Guess which are usually shown on the pre-release screenshots.

So yeah, I think SS4 is in good hands now. Since then, CT got more modelers and even an in-house concept artist now.

I would vote for the banana option, but there isn't any. So I voted Classic. Best balance between beautiful colored environments and silly humor. The enemy design of Serious Sam 3 is best, though.

Honestly, I don't really notice any discernible difference between the art style of TFE and TSE aside from the locale choices.

So I'm going to go with "Classic," but by that I'm referring to TFE, TSE and SSHD collectively.

There are two forms of realism: actual realism and virtual realism. The first is self-explanatory. The second is more about what feels like it could be real within an established stage and setting. I find the latter to be way more interesting in games.

My point is that modern day Egypt itself is hideous. You would have to take some serious creative liberties to make it remotely pleasing to the eyes.

As LD said, regardless of how you put it, realistic visuals is perfectly fine, but that doesn't mean you should use no colors whatsoever. The point is, if it's colorless, it's just simply boring looking.

And when people say how TFE was as realistic as SS3 is today....not really. IIRC, TFE used much more colors, blue was actually really strong blue, not some blue with uber low saturation that looked more like gray.

THe other thing is, TFE looked more like egypt used to looked back then, which was very good idea, because that way, you can have a lot of colors everywhere, unliked the washed down egypt temples of today. Both are realistic sure, but TFE, which tried to look more like egypt in it's own time back then, looked much more colorfull for that reason. You could do similar with SS3, in raise the saturation of the colors and stuff.

Yeah, the colors in TFE gave it a very unique atmosphere without being cartoony. Although I still wouldn't call the environments in Serious Sam 2 cartoony.
