Default Live and Let Die

As I prepared to play the tape of the first Roger Moore Bond movie, my expactations were low indeed.

What a pleasant surprise! I actually remembered the pre-credit sequence fairly well from all those years ago... in fact this one was so memorable that after well over a decade I kept thinking "oh yeah, this part..."

But never mind that. The opeing credits blew me away. Here I knew there was something new coming. And it was intense. And it was cool. I think the entire genre of heavy metal videos in the 1980s consisted of rehashes of the opeining credits to this film. And then...

Introducing Jane Seymour

And these were her glory days... she is a highlight of the movie, certainly coming closer to a contemporary idea of beauty... caught me off guard. Wow.

The return of Quarrel! Sort of.

What in the world happened to Yaphet Kotto? He used to be in everything. He fills the villain's shoes quite well here.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. Roger Moore slips right into the role. I hardly noticed it was him. It was just Bond. I did get a bit addled by classy english dialect that replaced Sean Connery's distinctive brogue. And there were more jokes in this one. But overall, it was pretty good.

I liked the plot. Of course I remembered almost all the scenes, because they scared the living daylights out of me as a kid... you see I last saw this when I was too young to notice miss Seymour. Scary but riveting. This is the scariest bond, although You Only Live Twice is still the wierdest.

If nothing else, watch those opening credits for a keystone of pop culture. The '80s metal combination of skulls, fire, and strategigally photographed naked women began here.

And it has the guy from the 7up commercials to boot.

Considering the crap I expected, this was a hearty thumbs up. And even if it is not great it has some great elements.

although I can/will not say that I HATE any bond film, Live and Let Die has got to be at, or very near, the bottom of the list (along with Never Say Never Again - where Connery makes a comback in the mid-80's).....

but I must say that the theme song is one of the best Bond themes ever....

yeah, it is the "voodoo" one....hey, its a good film, but in comparison to most of the other Bond films I must say it's pretty bad....not the acting or anything like that, just the story-line is pretty dull and slow....

Well I must reemphasize that it exceeded my expectations, not that it exceeded other Bond movies. Having watched more Moore today I can say with mroe confidence that this had the seeds of many a bad trend.

However I maintain that the opening credits actually rank pretty well so far.
