Default Can textures be used to cast shadows?

Never tried this before with the engine, and I know how to make stuff like in this pic.

But see how the texture to the right casts no shadows on the left? Obviously the texture has an alpha channel to see thru and not see thru. Can that be affected so that the texture that allows light to pass thru only allows light to pass thru parts of the polygon that are set as transparent in the alpha channel?

Basically, so the steel grate casts a shadow on the left...

Look at the tex, it has NO alpha channel.
Its just a flat tex with faked background.

Maybe with the Illuminating property of lights and polgons... ?

But I don't think it supports alpha channels...

I just thought there might be an easy way to cast a shadow of something like a steel grate without having to add all the extra polys to make a 3d grate. I dont know how that particular scene was made, but im willing to be that the texture does have an alpha channel, if that really is a skybox behind it. The polygon illumination properties have to be set for that type of effect to happen, so yes, Ive tried that.

just select the polly export it to raw, convert raw to lw or 3ds, then drop the texture on it. You'll be haveing 4 polies at most I think.
