Thumbs up BTBA mapping challenge

I'm glad to announce that BTB Airlines, our vehicular warfare mod for SS:SE is very near to being finished. One of the things we are still in need of is high quality maps. More of them.

You don't necessarily have to become a team member, just make a good map and we'll give you all credit for it and you will also get a prerelease testing position. If you want it, that is.

The mod involves ground and air vehicles, so it would be good to have some space in air and also possibilities for vehicles to move from place to place. If you need more exact details, contact either asko@nettimesta.com or seriousgrandpa@seriouszone.com

How about some other basic info, like how big are the player models (cars/planes) in relation to Sam himself in a normal game? (for use in map proportions)

Well,i hope you all got figured out the mod is about air/ground vehicle warfare, therefore it would be wise not to make a level of excessive use of terrain(mountains and stuff). The theme of the levels can be whatever you want(and be as original as you can be). Tho I suggest that you keep the style fun(but you still CAN make a doom3 style map ). Prefab models and textures are made on demand(by none other than me (and maybe asko)), but try to limit your demands and try to use the original se textures as much as you can(but no se styled maps please ). Mail me with your demands at seriousgrandpa@seriouszone.com and i'll get right on it Try to be as specific as you can in your mails(screenies and sketches are welcome).

As for the player model sizes, below are some pics of a standard car size and the pretty much biggest plane in the game(have in mind that the cars and the planes move much quicker than sam):

Is this still going on? Do you still need maps to be made, because I have a great idea for a map that Im soon to make. If you have played the last level of Halo, then you will know what it is like .. i dunno how much time I have but I will try ..

Well, as the time goes, the car physics changes, and as the car physics changes, the map style changes too Btba now works absolutely sweet with terrain(not high mountains tho)

Look heres the thing. I've already been making a kickass racecourse type map and It could work well with deathmatch. The only problem is the maps height. I don't think it would be possible for planes. I don't know what to do and I don't wanna start it all over. Maybe there could be a car only mode in your mod Anyway I'll try to work soem way around this problem you see. I made the original hollow cube for the world and then portal the sides right? Then I put terrain or actual map in this cube. The problem is that for some reason the cube cloned the terrain and I was having problems and deleted the cube. Don't worry you don't float around. The actual level is in a trenchlike world so its ok. Just not for airplanes I'll post some pics as soon as I can. I also understand that because of this map problem you may not except my map and thats ok.

Oh yeah and theres a bigass jump on a section of the course and theres stadium seating and the whole deal. It would be like Destruction Derby 2 all over again except with weapons.

they said don't worry about the planes, there are going to be a bunch of out door maps for them.
heh, the 747 would be about as big as the desk!

Yes, there will be, so don't worry about that. And incase you didn't know, there's also a racing mode which is for ground vehicles only.

Awsome! My first actuall SS map might actually be a success after many many failed regular maps. I think it will look good. By the way I just wanted to know if you have any stadium audience texture or something like that? Oh and also I have made the course in sections and was curious as too how your team is making the actual track? I originally had that overlapping of polygons problem but was able to fix that by setting the polys at blend. I am also having the problem with joining the worldbase with the track, I get ugly dissapearing polys and stuff. Hopefully I can work a way around this. I'm still fairly new to successfull SS mapping.

check the DETAIL box for the dssapearing polys.

Ok this is the problem. I try to join sections of the track to the mainworld which is the terrain model which I made in Semt. I get holes in the terrain and the road.

I get holes probobly because my brushes are overlapping each other...

I know how to vertex edit so that these brushes don't overlap but it is much harder when it is a made brush rather than a cgs brush where you can simply draga nd pull on points and I find it hard to shape brushes once they are made. Plus I don't think shaping the brushes will help. Again these problesm don't stop my production of the map just are little fallbacks.

As you can see that joning the main woeld with the road is bad and since each section of road has been added as "L" or new layer because I thought I would have to udjust them later instead of adding them to mainworld as I went. Anyway to tell you the truth this isn't a very big problem. I am mainly concerned about shadows that don't show up right if they are not set to mthe main worldbase. Alos the track is much much wider than it appears and don't judge the "crappy look" as it is now. I just mainly want to find a way to fix these problems If I can.

Well I guess I'm screwed. I can delete the road and start over but how the **** to make nice curves in the road? Dammnit I thought I was getting somewhere!
Ok now I have something to really complain about SSeditor. Too many problems. I can't even place brushes within eachother as the same worldbase or they have screwy polygon problems. I hate to say this but even Worldcraft allows overlapping of polygons in any direction or angle and groups them cleanly with nice cuts. Asko Sorry about this. I'll try some other method, Ir eally wanted a racecourse dammnit! I sometimes wished some of the old mapping people were still around here, no offense to you guys that are equally as talented. We just need an official SS mapper on here.
