Unfortunately, the law doesn't presume to believe a person is innocent of ripping off someone else's intellectual property. The only time there are questions of propriety is when fair use comes into play, but there are strict rules for what counts as fair use as well.

As for proving that you have permission, as long as you have saved the email or link to where permission was given then you are fine. Writing public credits is just good form and something people should do anyway out of respect for the original authors.

I am simply stating the ideal practices that people should follow. We encourage people to do the right thing. If they don't.. well then they have to live with that.

It does.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presumption_of_innocence
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 11, states: "Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.".
It doesn't say there are any exceptions for copyright.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_...nging_material
Note that the owner of copyright has to prove that infringement occurred. The material is not considered infringing until it is a proven fact.
Also, lookie here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secrecy_of_correspondence
You cannot request people to uncover their private mail without a court order.
And finally, let me quote this page again:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presum...ocence#Meaning
The defendant does not have to testify, call witnesses or present any other evidence

In short: people don't have to prove that they have a permission to use a resource. Only the copyright owner can accuse you of infringement, and only he is obligated to provide proofs of his statement.

An example for the post above:
https://ia801402.us.archive.org/9/it...360902.1.0.pdf

TL;DR --> OMG some guy(s) broke the copyright laws and said bad things to me on the Internet.

This one didn't even go for a trial.

Well ****, last night my hard drive died... There was a power outage, or more like electricity shock? Lately it happens quite often, making me rage every time but usually the most I've had is a corrupted sessionstore.js file for mozilla firefox. It was just a moment, looking at the bulb above it went off, then on again, then off again, then on. My PC turned off for 2-3 sec then started back up again by itself, but something was wrong, it was freezing every few seconds, pretty badly too. A friend said that he's had this problem before and it was his hard drive, and he fixed it by running CHKDSK. I did as well, and I had to reboot to run it at boot-time, but when I did, it never did start, whatever I did... In the end I reinstalled Windows on my second hard drive, but I can't access the contents of the first drive, the system is not even detecting it. Looks like it's dead for good

Lost the work dir for the map with everything I made so far, lost many of my other projects, lost the save games of many games (will have to start them from the begining now), lost my large porn collection, as well as my whole music library, and most of my photos.

Perhaps if I start again from scratch right now I might be able to make some quick map in time, but it definitely won't be even remotely as cool and epic as what I had before, so I lost all motivation.

Now, if you excuse me, I've gotta go pick up the axe and brutally murder whoever's responsible in the electrical company.

You could try looking for someone who does data recovery stuff.

If the HDD's circuit board is fried, it can be replaced and then the data might be readable.

And even if some data got corrupted, there should still be recoverable blocks of data on the platters so you might be able to get most of your stuff back.

This data recovery subreddit seems to be active, you could try asking around there for help with the issue..

Good luck!

Thanks, I'll look around, but if it's not free, it will have to wait - I'm broke right now, I can't even afford to try Talos

The map was almost done too, I was in the process of balancing the battles and adding eye candy

You should always have at least two copies of the data you don't want to lose. Good recovery solutions are murderously expensive and rarely yield useful results, especially with large and complicated filetypes that have a very low error tolerance.

I did have backups of the map and the assets... on the same drive I never expected it to die, it's been serving me since 2008 without any issues, I mainly thought Sed might corrupt a file or something...

It sadly doesnt seem humanly possible to remake the map again in time for the deadline, but I guess I can remake it at a later point for my mod, it will fit there nicely.

Backups are completely useless if they are kept on the same storage device, it protects you from software-related data corruption sure but that's about it. Judging by the age of the disk I guess it was already on its way out and it wouldn't have changed much whether you experienced outages or not.

There is no such thing as reliable data storage, so always assume the worst and have good data redundancy. Your disks could die after 1 month of usage or 1 decade, only time can tell.

That wont work, as I said this is now a fresh install of windows 7 on another drive, the damaged drive is not even detected, also I don't have a System Tools dir or System Recovery app there.

Soon ... If you have not finished your maps, we recommend to hurry. Deadline will not be extended. Most likely. In past competitions it could continue for months.

Eh, it's okay for a trailer. But since Hero Number One, I don't trust any trailers coming out from SSite.

And stop being so negative Misch, you know that you could do better if you weren't a slave to Ubisoft.

Of course you should! You might be a slave, but at least you get paid a lot for doing game developing and those things that you like. Never let an opportunity run away.

By the way, what do they mean by junior game dev?
