Hard to really give any feedback on something I haven't played yet or don't know enough about But yes, I too like the idea of not going overboard with the music, just go with ambient sounds instead (unless it's a cutscene or something similar).

Scary stuff feels fake if there's music playing

That depends on what you define atmosphere as. You want to be scary just jump-scares and darkness will get you nowhere, but building an atmosphere of oppression and breaking player expectations is really effective.

But I say atmosphere is more than just that. They're the complete package and can make an okay game much better. A focused theme with coherent assets will sell the design. Music more often will break atmosphere, so it should be used sparingly but you need to have an awesome soundscape to compensate for it. There can't be one place where it's completely silent. Then there's world building: The player needs to feel that they're just a tiny part of a big world instead of a world built for them and giving the idea they're the ultimate badass and center attention.

I made a thread about atmospheric games, but here's a small list of games that did atmosphere perfect in my opinion:

All STALKERs, Unreal 1, BioShock 1, Metro series and every Soulsborne game.

The Metroid Prime games also did atmosphere well, and that's also by having somewhat arcady gameplay, and music always present. They are not exactly scary, after all you're a space badass walking tank, but the atmosphere is definitely thick with those. Too bad they are console only.

Man, that's looking amazing.

The sound volume is relative, in a flyover video with only ambient it has to be prominent, but I assume it's more in the background in actual gameplay. Still, I love how colorful everything looks and varied everything sounds. Can't wait to see how this progresses.

I'm probably crazy that I can actually see specific models and textures that are from the CT asset database. I think one of the ambient sound loops are familiar too.

The environment may be city-like, but I doubt it has a city-like population. Crickets avoid densely populated areas and are hard to hear over city noise, but I doubt both of those things apply here.

Yeah I realize the "city" area is not really populated, so it makes some sense.. but it still sounds a bit loud to me (are they even crickets that I hear?)

Not to rain on anyone's parade but those aren't crickets. They sound like cicadas to me. Also Discy is right - it makes sense to emphasize the ambient sounds in flyover footage like this and I'm pretty sure that it won't be as loud in the actual game.

That is correct, those are cicadas. "Cvrčak" is how we call that bug. They get very loud on a hot summer day, even in little towns if surrounded with trees.

I have no idea what they are doing with SCUM, so I'm just guessing here.

And yep, they are cicadas. They are so relaxing, wish there were some over here. I remember when some person on Steam heard them in Talos and reported them as a bug. I mean, yes, they are bugs, but not "audio bugs in the game".

So is this game more like Ark and Rust or more like Battleground or H1Z1:KotK?

I just saw the Environmental Flyover and it looks really pretty, but I can't imagine myself enjoying an open-world online game like Ark. Videos I have seen of games like that just seems like meaningless progression. :/

I really enjoyed the enhanced Survival mode in Fallout 4, but once I had equipment so that not everything was a risk, it just became boring again. Similarly, I'm the sort of person who was bored to tears by Minecraft so maybe I'm not the target audience.

So if I understand right I can see this as an MMORPG with a persistent character. Looking forward to this, even though I'm still a little bit unsure at how it's going to work, as I still get the "generic-battle-royale"-feeling that people have mentioned before.

Can I compare the game to WoW/SWTOR/CO/etc at all, or would that be an inaccurate comparison?

I wonder whether it's going to be VAC-protected, some other 3rd-pary AC protected or if it's gonna use a homebrew solution instead. (The fourth option, no-AC is hardly imaginable for a game like this)
