Lightbulb Zeb89 - My thoughts on SS3

Hello, serious people of Seriouszone.

This is my "review" of Serious Sam 3, or if you prefer, my "opinionated verdict"

I'm going to be honest with you. I rarely have fun playing any given FPS game (or any other genre) alone, in single player, with nobody to tea-bag and defeat. But I found the SS3 campaign really fun and engaging nontheless!

Something made me persist until I had completed the whole game from A to Z, like one big tunnel of epicness which keeps getting better and better! First few maps, slower paced but an intriguing "lets get to know each other" feel, then later the action picks up, levels widen out, weapons get heavier and the fun guage goes overdrive! The fight music also follows the fray masterfully...

Whether it was Sams quotes, the fact I could tear apart most enemies using merely my bare hands, or the jawdropping effects the weapons had on my foes, I am not certain. It was most plausably a combination of these three things

And guess what. After the first run, I just wanted to start over again on an even higher difficulty! Anyway, to put it in a nutshell: it was fun. Definately more so than any of the previous games. Nothing like the "interactive B-movies" we get today, at 60€ a pack. Some people would call SS3 presumptuous. I call it REAL!

I enjoyed it in spite of running the game at a mere 20-30 fps.

Lately, standards have been dropping faster than a dress on prom night, and nobody seems to give 2 damns about it. But in this respect, Sam is a beacon of light in a dark videogame world where health regeneration, petty-pseudo realism, and 2 weapons at a time is the standard call for the average gamer.

While Serious Sam 3 - BFE has clearly made a leap forward in comparison to the previous game, regarding single player campaign, the same praise cannot be made for the versus compartment.

Now, while most of you already know who I am, for those who do not: I have played Serious Sam competitively since mid 2006, and since then have been 4 times world champion on both classic (2008-2009) and HD (2010-current). This just to say that I do have a fair idea of what I'm talking about.

I'm not shallow minded enough to rant about SS3 deathmatch not being as good as HD. This is most probably an intentional decision, to make this episode of the series more approachable to people who are not interested in persuing the pro gamer career (if indeed it can be considered so) and becoming 1337. People have lives...

Most players rightfully want to have fun without having to spend a full year (or more) learning tricks and tactics in order not to lose 20-2 at every round they play.

Making deathmatch just a little more noob friendly on at least 1 game in the series means less ragequits and more sales, which will in turn enables Croteam to focus on future projects which will probably involve more content for serious versus players.

The competitive community in fact, which includes me too, prefers Serious Sam HD by far when it comes to deathmatch.
Why?
- faster paced
- thus trick moves/jumps
- better weapon variation for versus
- much better designed maps for versus, and more of them
- much less hardware exigent
- other little details

A recent poll confirms 180 people out of 209 prefer Serious Sam HD Deathmath to Serious Sam 3 (17) OR Serious Sam classic (12).

Now that there are 2 games for both types of players, everyone should be happy.

What makes me happy, personally, is that Croteam is still supporting HD and is currently patching it as we speak to correct, among other things, the few unbalances in versus. Now this kind of interest/support is a rare and valuable trait among game developers, so I'd like to thank them for this and also for allowing me to take part in the SS3 beta testing

So, to wrap this up: 9/10 for single player ... for versus it's MEH but we have HD (supported) for that so... double win

Hopefully more deathmatch maps will pop up for Serious Sam 3 in the future.

Weapon variaton? Easy fix.
-Add a fixed sniper in some new maps
Better maps?
-Hopefully there'll be an update in the future, and probably some community maps will get in.
Tricks?
I think it's not because of the game itself, it's because of the maps, lets say it, they are basic, don't have a structure like HDs used to have,so no tricks to perform. Again, new maps will fix this.

I can't really argue with anything there as I don't have the necessary experience, BUT consider this: SS3 is modable, thus a community versus-enhancing mod could be made (or Croteam themselves might improve versus mechanics in the future aswell).

Also maps will hopefully not be an issue soon as more people start making maps. (Of course it's very likely Croteam will release some new maps aswell )

Of course the hardware requirements can't really be *improved*. People in time may get better computers, but that's about it...

The point is, all but the hardware exigence are things that can be adjusted

There is something about the gameplay in Serious Sam 3 versus that makes it completely different from HD versus. Not sure what...

I feel that its the lack of good maps and weapon variety. Player movement is also kind of restrictive and there are no ragdoll deaths.

Y'know, every other person who reviewed this game just put up a regular title that didn't include their name at the start.
Also, wrong forum.

You beat me to it, Brute. I was gonna say: "I'm glad your name was in the title, otherwise I might have accidentally read it."

Anyway, moved to the reviews forum, because it needs lovin' too.

Hey, if I really didn't care I wouldn't even bother coming here, I just like to point out that he's the only one with his name in the thread.
