Default Re: Linux Client Beta: Feedback and Bug Reports

Hello there,
first of all thanks for porting such a fun game to linux.

Now my experiances (found bugs) with the game.
First i played nearly 8 hours till now, 3 of them alone 4 together with a friend and another hour alone all with one profile.

First problem that occured:
if i start a multiplayer coop server it crashes when its done with loading the level
ok so my friend (windows box) opened a game an i wanted to join, resulting in the same crash (both Segmentation fault). After that i just tried it again (joining his game, he didn't change anything) and then all went ok, so i think i have to start the game all over again until it doesn't crash.

Second problem:
today i played another hour continuing from where me and my friend quit this night. all was going well until i died to much and wanted to reload an old savegame but it was gone, so i quit the game and watched for the savegame files myself. there where preloads for 4 Savegames but only one .sav savegame (this was some real early one). Then i started the game again and wanted to check out my savegames again. But when it came to selecting my profile again the game told me that my profile is broken and if i wanna delete it. I clicked no and then it deleted the profile. You forgot the yes means no, and no means yes dialog.
Now i need to start all over again, or just wait until me and my friend play again and then we start at our last reached point.

Third problem:
Language! i dont know how your engine language system is working but replacing sometimes isn't that good, you should use a full word replacment.
here a funny example (for german language)
original "translated"
no nein
ok now think what "normal" means in german?
normaly it is normal too but after that replacment method you are using its
original "translated"
normal neinrmal
just funny but some preferences are hard to read
solution for me delete german stuff, like always the games are better with original language

Attached i got some of the logs where some stuff was happening
ahh and you should not use the choosen language in log files it would be easier for you if i post them in english but i don't want to translate my whole log file so sorry for that

Ok so my Ubuntu upgrade to 6.10 went great and SS2 works better now than before, but I still can't make it run full screen and I still can't find how to make SS2 run in English?!?!

I bought the game because they gave me the opportunity to beta test, it's rather a silly game but kinda fun :-)

On top of the language issue's the movies cut my frame rate to about 8fps and it blink like crazy...

For all the guys with language problems, remove all language GRO's from your SS2 dir (E.g. Content_FRENCH.gro (or something like that)). In the readme you can see which gro files should be there, you can delete the other ones.

Considering that Croteam is only porting the game to GNU/Linux for the community, it makes sense for the community to support Croteam's efforts. Now if only more companies would be as generous and considerate to the people that choose to run the OS of choice.

Great !!! Nice work Vedran & all the Croteam.

Really great news.

report of new probs I detected:

_ sometimes; it happens randomly; the HUD, sprites (like subtitles or sun glare) and serious items (like ammunition) on the map are "flickering". I don't know what's causing this. Just in game it happens not so often..

_ elements of the map are disappearing while looking around. It happens on the top of trees, and randomly on element of the decor. It happens many times.

http://boby.joe.free.fr/files/serious2_tree.png

_ on the Ursul Suburb map, when you are defending the village, I jumped on some building near the hided tresor item and it appears there are invisible walls up there. But more bogus, some polygon are missing. This is what I see.

Ran right out to buy this when I saw the beta was out, and while I'm waiting for my glacially slow internet to download it I thought I'd mention that your PlanetMirror links seem to be broken. Fortunately FileFront is still working, so it's not a huge deal.

Check your installation. Have you installed OpenAL.

Maybe you should provide more information about your distribution, etc.

If OpenAl is installed on your system you need to be sure this line in the Sam2.ini file is properly set
Code:
sfx_iAPI = 1;
that is the proper setting, untill Microsoft ports D3D and DSD to GNU/Linux

it seems to me that most of the serious problems only occur on gentoo.. overoptimized?

@caedes:
don't think so, couse i play on gentoo and its damn good, the big problem is that gentoo provides a good 64bit support (Most games does not).

@keichi:
ever tried
ldd Bin/Linux-Dynamic-Release/Sam2
?
is there an unresolved library?

Default Re: Linux Client Beta: Feedback and Bug Reports

After playing for a while I can say that I've run into pretty much the same problems as everyone else. The only issue I haven't seen mentioned here is that it segfaults for me if I try to start it at 1280x800, but as that requires an ini file hack that's probably not surprising. 1680x1050 and 1440x900 both work as widescreen resolutions however. 1680x1050 isn't playable on my 7600 GT and 1440x900 is probably pushing it, I suppose I could turn down the details but I haven't had time to do any tweaking so I'm still running at the auto detected settings (except resolution, which is probably the problem).

@keichi:
hmm...
looks fine and what about ne drivers? the beta drivers from nvidia are stable enough to use yust try them (just unmask nvidia-drivers and emerge them)
they support Opengl V2.1

@others
is there anybody out there who got it run with an ati card? A friend of mine tries to run it on a linux box with an ati card but it won't work. He can get into the menu but when it checks for the best grafic settings then the game crashes with opengl out of memory. Does this game needs a minimum on graphic memory?

@sirtwist: somebody mentioned something about atis drivers not supporting pixelshader 2.0 - which are essential for playing serious sam 2.

        libogg.so.0 => /usr/lib/libogg.so.0 (0x4eaf9000)
Looks pretty normal :/
While it might not fix anything, you should update your nVidia drivers, the 8776 update was a security fix IIRC.

I'm assuming you copied it over from a Windows partition, which begs the question are your permissions set properly? If nothing else works try copying the files directly from the CD's/DVD (A clean install).

Hope it helps.

Default Re: Linux Client Beta: Feedback and Bug Reports

Hi,

The client is working but a bit slow (20 FPS with a 6600 GT).
The biggest flaw at the moment is that the game does not save stuff in a hidden subdirectory of my home but in the installation directory. The directories permissions are strange too (often rwx^3).
The fullscreen is sometimes weird: sometimes I can see in the bottom about 10 pixels of my desktop.
The other bugs are known.

So.. Reinstalled the whole Game 3 Times now, with and without the Script from Caedes.

The only error that doesn't occur when i install the Game without the Script is this one

Code:
Could not open file! (Content/SeriousSam2/Databases/PowerUpEffects.rsc). Creating replacement file.
So that must be a bug in the Script from Caedes.

And now i can even present a log file entry
Code:

Hi

I had the same segfault-after-a-minute problem when sound was on, with openal-0.0.8. After upgrading to "openal-0.0.8-r1" the problem disappeared.
I'm using gentoo.

if updating openal won't work, try the library package that was mentioned a few pages before. (I need this package 'couse i am on a 64bit system, would be cool if croteam compiles a 64bit version if they are done)

Ok.. That Strange.. I reemerged openal, and now it runs fine

But a Seriously problem is, that the Game has no control over the X server, so.. if you move the Mouse to left,right, down, up, the wohle Screen goes with them. And thats in Full Screen mode, thats just damn annoying..

Ah and.. of cource i have the other bugs, mentioned here
