Default ATI R350 to undercut FX

http://www.ve3d.com/Comments.aspx?ID=2309&contenttype=1

According to all reports, the R350 will be at least as fast as a GeForce FX. Now we know that it will be released in March for $150USD less than a FX.

*shrug* They take turns passing each other. When the Radeon 350 comes out it will pass the GF FX and then Nvidia will pop a hotter card and so on... the only real question is how it effects the prices of existing cards and when that performance / price point line will be crossed that causes you to upgrade. Any way you look at it, competition is good for us. Keep those prices low...

*edit* Continuing competition *if* the CEO of ATI and some of his friends stay out of prison anyway. If they go down, ATI stock crashes, their reputation suffers / sales slump and cash flow problems emerge the company's ability to keep up with Nvidia could be compromised. Isn't greed wonderful...

Well, you're right about their rep... that's why it's delicate enough to take real damage from this.

The only reason Nvidia is behind at this point is their transition to the .13um process. You can't just snap your fingers and do a die shrink like magic. It takes a lot of time and effort. ATI is still using a .15um process on their chips. In the next year or two when they have to change from .15 to .13, they will have a huge delay between products just like Nvidia did with the GF4 and GFFX.

I like ATI, their stuff is reliable, my brother bought a geforce 4 lately and i must say its pretty crap compared to my mobility radeon 7500.

I just realy dislike these hardware growth spurts...new chip tech research has been growing at a rate that these video cards can change cheaply and often put out a new design....a new standard of computer function is on the near horizon and in 15 years id say that 1 gig slots will be standard on PC boards...in the mean time ati and everyone else for that matter will still be rakeing in money....it wasnt that long ogo that a 1 gig drive and 64megs of ram with a pci vid card was hot...ATI still has nicer color but it drivers are still crappy...they always just manage ta make em work but never the way they claim...sheesh....just go th the ATI forums and look
yup i like the ATI cards but would rather not mess with thenm when it comes to serious gameing ....nivida fan boy?....hmmmm...yeah...for now
the Ti 4200 is still a good choice for keeping the game smooth and it comes in flavers i just got the 8X flavored board with a trade in on the 4X...i didnt notice any difference except for color being richer...a small improvement but one i like .

sledge: that sounds very right to me, and know that all the benchmarks of current fx cards are using beta drivers, we know that the cards probly gain twice the speed after a shitload of driver updates by nvidia.
so i guess there might be a time when ati swiches to .13 that nvida will get a serious step up on them, and who knows nvidias cards later this year may match ati's new offering.

And you've brought up a point I missed: Detonator drivers. Speed improves incrementally with every release, but every once in a while, a new Detonator comes out with a real world 10%+ speed increase. I'd say at least once a year. And remember, all benchmarks up to now are from beta drivers (like the Max PC article).

Nvidia has been rather quiet lately. They powered on the hype machine a month ago for the FX's introduction, then shut it down a few days later. Who knows what they have up their sleeve?

Whoa...twice the speed?

Please name one time when any company, NVIDIA or ATI, has made drivers that increase the speed of a card by 100%. the Detonator 40s increased 3DMark by maybe 10%, and other games by 5% or 10%.

You will so never find drivers that will increase performance of a piece of hardware by 100%, from any company.

that # was not statisticly correct, but in some cases, from the time the gforce 3 came out till right now, there has been alot of speed gains, and in some cases certain things could have been doubled in speed.

Doubled in speed, I don't ****ing think so Now, maybe if you compare CPUs from 2 years ago and drivers of 2 years ago with CPUs of today and drivers of today, you might see big gains, but not purely with drivers.

Also, is anyone forgetting the Catalyst 2.1s, and how Radeon 8500 owners were getting, in some cases, 1000pt 3DMark increases?

One thing I hope NVIDIA improves on with the FX is AF. It's always been hella-slow, even on the GF4s. AA just looks stupid without AF

Well, I can't read the website because of that SQL virus.

Everything I've heard about R350 is PURE speculation, so I dunno where they're getting their info. But seeing as I can't read the article, it's kind of moot.

I've been thinking about the statement that the R350 will be $150 cheaper than a FX. I don't think you'll get an R350 for $250. Shortly after the FX's intro, a $500 price was quoted for an Ultra and I think that's what ATI is comparing it to. That would mean the R350 would cost $350 (FX - $400) and that would make more sense.

Edit: from what I've been reading, the NDA's expire Monday. So you should see some FX reviews in two days.

That's a good point Sledge. This post at ve3d didn't really have any concrete info (like a price), so they may well have been comparing the price to old news. Well, I'll wait until Monday before thinking anymore about this.
