Default Time Travel - Wired

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/1...imetravel.html

Interesting article, but every time I think about time travel I feel like running into a brick wall head-first as fast as I can.

Weird...though I thought I knew parts of that theory...fact is, it'll probably never happen, or atleast not in our lifetime...
I think other things like nano technology are more important right now, since they could give humanity much more advantages then something like time travel which would take ages to develop...

Hmm, I don't think time travel is allowed, unless he does it to you for some inexplicable and immediately useless purpose...

Of course, then again, he would not someone tampering with the invention of the Corndog so...

Forward time travel is possible, and has been proven through mathematics and actual experiments. If I remember correctly, it was proven by using two atomic clocks, synchronizing them, then putting loading one onto a supersonic aircraft and letting it fly around for a bit, at speeds a few times faster than sound. When the atomic clocks are compared again, the one on the airplane will be slower by a very tiny fraction of a second. Reverse time travel, as far as I know, is just theory at this point.

Of course, people aren't very interested in moving through time at fractions of a second. Time travel on a grand scale, I believe anyway, probably just won't happen. But, we can always dream...

All of those theories and such are discussed in the excellent books of Stephen Baxter

"Ring" - Discussion of closed timelike curves and time travel

"Timelike Infinity" - also time travel using Wormholes. The article discusses putting one end of a wormhole on a spacecraft then accelerating it at high speeds.

...actually, almost all of Baxter's books deal with this kind of stuff.

Yeah, I'm sure they'd let you too. Hey, I'd just like to borrow this time machine for a bit, just so I can pass a few exams and stuff.

I don't believe in time travel. Slowing down time, okay, but reversing it? Seems logically impossible to me.

I suppose it depends on how you want to look at time travel. If you think about it, there are people that are travelling back in time all the time. With astronomy, people are looking at stars that existed millions of years ago and for all we know, do not exist today. As for changing the past, people do that all the time too.

Say, for example, you lost your car keys. You spend all this time running around the house looking for them and finally give up because you can't find them. Just when you give up, your roommate shows up and tells you that he borrowed the car and hands you your keys back. As soon as he hands you the keys, the past has changed. Suddenly, you go from you losing your car keys to your roomate taking your car keys.

Time is a logical construct, or I suppose you could say, an illusion. Illusion does have that negative connotation of being the product of a mental illness, but in this case, I want to use the term to suggest a logical construct.

What it comes down to is that your concept of time is determines if time travel is possible or not.

Well, my concept of time travel is that it involves living in the past as an actor, not just seeing its traces or remembering it.
