You don't have to use normal + height map, you can use either only normal or only height, but it is common to use both (if you have them)

Looks awesome WarpZone

Hmmm... polybump heightmap doesn't really seem to do what I was expecting. It certianly doesn't effect other shader beneath it, so what's the point?

I can't get my existing shaders to look any better by adding it, so for now I'm just gonna keep things the way they are. I suspect under certian circumstances the three effects together could be extremely powerful, especially on animated characters. But it's just not ideal for this particular terrain mesh.

If you want an Heightmap to work, you have to use 1 poly bump shader, with the SAME texture/bump map(normal)/height map and the same UV map.

Yeah, but the parallax distortion only applies to the diffuse texture, not to other diffuse and/or shade textures layered beneath the parallax map, right? So it won't work here. Here, I need multiple layers of detail all working together. If my parallax can't coordinate with those existing layers, I don't want it.

I thought heightmaps works only if you have 2 textures applied (diffuse and a normal map). Btw, are you using the "black&white" textures for heightmap?

I was at first. But then when I read your words: "with the SAME texture/bump map(normal)/height map" I started literally using the same normal-map texture for both the bump map and the height map.

No matter what I do, it always just looks like a bunch of shiny glossy lumps over the top of a flat surface. Never like an intricate 3D mesh with millions of polies and lumps and hollows. I guess I need to experiment more.

Adding a heightmap makes the glossy lumps look different, but it never changes the fact that they're gloss lumps over a flat texture in the background.

If I use a diffuse map in the Poly bump shader, then it looks a little more 3D as you strafe past it... more like what "parallax" is thought to mean. But then only if the diffuse texture is opaque. If it's shade, the underlying diffuse textures remain static and flat, so it spoils that 3D effect.

Tweaked my colors a bit. Now my chocolate cake mix looks a little bit more like natural rock walls. It's still just as detailed when you shove your face in the wall, though.

I didn't read the whole thread, but you can also bake cavity map with Zbrush and export it to Sed2 to use it for shade texture.

Cavity map, huh? What's it end up looking like? Just like a greyscale texture applied as a shade over the whole thing?

No, I meant that diffuse texture should be applied as an base texture (static one, no NM and so on), bump map as an Normal of the static texture, and heightmap as grayscale texture of static texture or its NM. Oh and I forgot that it's better to use Atlas mapping, if you want heightmap to work...Not sure about it though, since it's been quite some time I made heightmaps.

Screenshot looks a lot better, though I don't understand why people like to use stain texture on sand texture? Quite pointless if you ask me What kind of type will this map be? DM or SP?

well it atually depends on how terrain looks, but it should add realism to terrain shading.
but yeah, you apply it as shader texture to the whole terrain. You only have to experiment with settings in zbrush.

GeForceNoob: Thanks for the tip. I'll examine PolyBump some more and try to get the most out of it.

As for the sand stain, well, you're right. But Croteam's sand texture tiles VERY obviously if I don't break it up with something.

Zocky: Interesting. I wonder if it's anything like Ambient Occlusion mapping in Blender?

Ambient Occlusion in SEd2 does that, but not very good.
So there's where cavity map comes in help

yeah like wytas said, sed2 does that, but not that good, so you can improve that with cavity map. You can bake it in other apps as you said, not necesarry zbrush.

But we're talking the same concept as Blender's Ambient Occlusion, right? I. E. Wherever there's a lot of vertecies pinched closely together, shadow tends to cluster there in all the little nooks and crannies?

Okay, so it's a pretty canyon. So what? Gameplay is much more important than graphics. Show me the monsters!

Oh, man, Jetholt, wait till you see it in action. I was so subtle about it... when a monster spawns, the dust just sort of gets thicker around the spawn point, so you never actually see a monster appear... They just march out of the roiling cloud of dust like a wave, firing shots at you as they go. It's like an old war movie... very dramatic.

And since I'm using a modified version of the combat system I developed for Spaced Out, it doesn't matter how fast you kill, there's always more than you can handle coming.

Unlike Spaced Out, though, I don't start a wave with just one monster.

And now for someting completely different...

Natural-Born Gattling Man
( Sung to the tune of Green Back Dollar by The Kingston Trio )

Some people say I'm the chosen one.
Others say I'm just good.
But I'm just a nat'ral-born gattlin' man,
Shootin' what I think I should.
Oh yeah!
Shootin' what I think I should.

And I don't give a damn about an ammo cartridge...
Spend it fast as I can!
For a spinnin' barrel and a good grenade,
The only things that I understand,
Poor boy,
The only things that I understand.

When I was a little baby,
my momma said, "Hey, tot.
Travel into space and grow to be a man
And shoot what must be shot,
Poor boy,
Shoot what must be shot."

And I don't give a damn about a threat assessment...
Spawn 'em fast as you can!
For a rocket launcher and a pack of gnaars,
The only things that I understand,
Poor boy,
The only things that I understand.

Now that I'm a grown man,
I've traveled here and there.
I've learned that a cannon and Netrisca in my head,
The only ones who ever care,
poor boy,
the only ones who ever care.
