Zocky is right in that color contrast doesn't make any sense for this sort of setting. It's an ice map so cool colors are appropriate. Contrast and dramatic effects are achieved through other means like light and shadow, and if you've played through Realm of Despair, then you would know that Devostator has a really firm grasp on this. Realm of Despair was monochromatic but it was still way more interesting and had better atmosphere than anything in the base game (sorry Croteam). There's one distant tower/spike in the very beginning that casts a long shadow over the valley and moments like that really stand out.

I personally think that bright orange lights would look totally out of place in this map. I also think that the custom enemies will be as much a part of the scenery as the glaciers and rocks themselves. The bosses in Realm of Despair were as much a treat for the eyes as anything else in the map.

The first picture looks terrible and the colors are totally out of place. Ice worlds aren't supposed to be full of vibrant colors so the original style makes sense to me. To be fair, the base game didn't have much in the way of vibrant colors anyway. It was a brown and dry Egyptian desert wasteland. As I said, you can achieve a lot with lighting and shadows.

Phendrana Drifts comes to mind in Metroid Prime. It is an ice/snow area and indeed even the lights are often blue. There are only very small amount of orange there, only to show technology that doesn't belong there, placed by the enemy.

^Not exactly what I meant, the yellow should be just tiny details. Just keep ambience blue and make these tiny crystals on pillars hot.

Anyway, on the first picture I could spot the far plane, which I didn't on second. Everything blends together.

Take this image as example:

You would say there's just blue color here but, if you take a closer looks, there is some yellow/orange/green as contrast, but only just here and there, and the basic isn't just blue but lots of variation of blue, blue-green, and blue-purple (but they together act almost as if they are all blue, just with slight derivation).
