Which location do you guys wish to see demonized if Doom 4 is indeed Hell on Earth?

For me it's Las Vegas, obviously, but something tells me the game will just be in New York and then Hell

Well, at least there would be some red instead of just yellow.

I just realized that I own copies of classic Dooms for the first time in 2015, better late than never I guess. Previously I only played the shareware episode and got to play the full games at my friend's.

For some reason the gamma correction option isn't working right in GZDoom, going either below or above 1.0 does strange things to the graphics, because AMD drivers probably. Brightness and contrast do the trick for the most part but some areas pretty much need gamma correction to be remotely playable, like the maze in E1M2.

If the Doom sector lighting mode is too dark for you, you could switch to Standard Lighting mode or Software lighting mode, they are much brigther. I'm pretty much fine with the dark Doom Lighting mode, I just increased the ambient light for the fog a bit because of a few maps in Doom 2 being way too dark.

That indeed helped quite a bit, thanks. The increased brightness also causes some rooms to become hard to see in because colours start to look samey, perhaps playing with the contrast setting might help.

If Hell exists in Doom, does that mean there's a Heaven in Doom too?

I never thought I'd actually have ammo problems in Doom (Ultra-Violence). In E2M2 I used the berserk fists quite a bit. But now in E2M4 things are looking good ammo-wise.

lol that video
I've always played doom on the easiest difficulty but maybe I can try playing it at a higher difficulty now... I've basically had no ammo problems..

That's just lame.

I'm noticing a recurring theme in Doom level design: "the floor is lava". Practically every level seems to have these ungodly annoying unavoidable damaging floors, more than half the time without a protection suit nearby. In the Inferno episode this is worse than ever, 2 of the levels are practically nothing but damaging floors.

Did the level designers think it was fun to be forced to take damage while racing against the death clock and repeatedly loading the savegame until the maze is memorized? Mt. Erebus is one thing, but most of the levels don't even need damaging floors for their theme, and blood counting as damaging floor? What the actual fuck?

/22 years late rant

Finally, you noticed. The worst offender is Mt. Erebus and The Chasm.

Plutonia 2 did Icon of Sin better than id can. Unless they redeem themselves with Doom 4.

What do you mean "finally"? Were you waiting for me to play Doom and notice this specific design element?

Episode 4 is brutal on Ultra-Violence, and of course, E4M2 is already one of the most annoying levels in the game where you not only get an ocean of damaging floors below platforms but you also have to do platforming on said platforms. Then there's the ridiculous enemy encounters; pressing a switch on a platform surrounded by lava and suddenly 4 barons of hell and 2 lost souls appear, when I'm still just in the 2nd level and with limited supplies? Seriously? Before that there was another encounter with 4 surprise barons of hell when I was gonna get the yellow skullkey.

Oh, and as of now I just heard the roar of a cyberdemon. This is the point where Doomguy wants to cry in the shower and eat cookies.

imo Baron of Hell has the best Sight sound effect.

Yeah, Episode 4 is tough on Ultra Violence, but its not unbeatable, I've done it before. But it's definitely quite nerve-wracking at places, especially because of lack of supplies and cover, so you have to be creative.

Just skip the first level with minimal killing and you'll be gucci. Otherwise you have to punch those barons you've encountered. I think it is mediocre after lvl 2, levels are pretty generous with ammo and health after that.

Yeah, the secret level is already way better. Just trying to figure out how to get the blue armour on the crate...

EDIT: Got to E4M3. The start was just bonkers. I remember this level vaguely from a past run, but I don't remember it being this... intense. At least there are lots of supplies.

A good idea is to press the switch for the bridge and go get the invulnerability asap,

If only I could see anything at all while using those. I would happily turn off these annoying screen filters for powerups if I knew how.

EDIT: E4M4 was almost as easy as an episode 1 level. The guys at iD had absolutely no sense of balance or difficulty scaling.

Maybe in games like Doom they just randomly (after level 1) placed levels and voted in which level comes through per episode.. Games like Quake 2's levels flow together nicely.
