Default Buying steam games outside of steam?

How does this exactly work? I was waiting for a discount to buy Serious Sam 3 and here it is, however in a site called Gamersgate.
I have never bought a steam game not through steam, and I have got no idea how this works, really.

Do I instantly get a file which contains the registration thing or are they dumb enough to ship it to my house?
does it matter if I'm buying it on a different computer than the one I want to register the game on?

Sorry for the ignorance.

We share that ignorance, actually. I have only bought games as downloads 3 times, all Serious Sam games from Steam.

It's possible that they send you a Steam key via Email.

It shouldn't.
Steam will Email you to ask if it's ok that another computer is trying to access your Steam account (I've had this when getting a new PC) but otherwise it shouldn't matter.

What deep said. For Steam only games like SS3, they just send you a Steam key by email.

When you buy one of those Indie Bundles they either send you keys via email or a private link to your private page with links.

It doesn't matter where you get the Steam key from as long as it is a legit key/code.

So it's done, after I bought it through gamersgate, it gave me a download, which took 2 and a half hours, then it told me it's installing the game.
Yet now, I have just registered it through steam and this damned program asks me to download it all over again.
It tells me I'll be 'ready' to play the game in 5 more hours.

They are sucking my soul like midges.

I bought Human Revolution for Steam through Amazon (it was either that or SS3, I honestly don't remember). I had to make two downloads, but only one of them was significant.

I am not sure how good idea was to buy a game just a week before Steam Spring/Easter sales.

I'm not sure how wise it is to buy Steam games outside Steam to begin with. (unless you get it cheaper....but most such sites tend to be illegal)

Like I said, Amazon had one of those two games for $10 less than Steam. It was a good deal and I couldn't pass it up. And Amazon isn't an illegal distributor, so it was all good.

Is that just speculation or is there for sure a sale next week?

While there are some shady stores that sell Steam keys, there are also some legit ones like Amazon and Gamersgate. On rare occasions, I've seen them have better sale prices than Steam itself.

I have used greenmangaming for steam games before.
They just mail you an activation key.
But, you have to make sure it says 'steam' before you buy, because that 'capsule' drm thingy they have sucks badly.
