Default AntonioR's Showcase Thread - 2D Games

SERIOUS SAM 2D
THE LAST GAME HERO

by AntonioR Software

So lets resurrect my old showcase thread lost in the 2011 S! server crash...

In time before Double D, TRE and Kamikaze Attack, there was my Last Game Hero, a third year college project made using J.S. Harbour's Advanced2D engine. I never made anything similar before it, so it is not very good but I worked hard so it looks as good as possible.

It was released in September 2010. Nobody finished it except me

Big thanks to all who tried it or have said something nice about the game

Here is the link for version 1.2 (Windows only).
When starting the game Kaspersky AV may report the game as a keylogger. This probably has something to do with game input, just ignore it.

Improvisation is my middle name. No new code but I replaced the colored squares of the character with some stuff I found using google: "tshirt", "arm", "jeans" and "white nike". It doesn't look bad, doesn't it ?

Looks better!

However shouldn't be the character Sam?

I am just fooling around. The concept of the game is not yet defined as you can see, and since Double D is coming out I don't know will I use Sam, some of his multiplayer friends or something my own.

To explain some things I will quote myself:

I am at the stage in which I just try to make certain stuff work properly, so the game has just one test level for now.

My inspiration are indie games like Soldat , Seal Hunter , Gunplay and Facewound.
The "game" uses a modified version of Advanced2D engine (J.S. Harbour).

My stuff that seems to work:
- pixel shaders (for individual sprites or the whole scene)
- multiple layer entity/sprite management
- updated bounding rectangle collision detection (works with "point" sprites, "line" sprites (two-three points ), multiple collision boxes)
- scrolling textures (works with only one texture per "scroller")
- tile based large sprites (ground in the video is a large sprite drawn with a smaller texture)

My stuff that doesn't quite work:
- platforming ( the core of the whole game doesn't work ) - colliding with platforms, walking on them, scrolling world objects...
- realistic bouncing
- skeletal animation

My wishlist:
- moving platforms
- 2D level editor...

Looks interesting, though I like the "mario" style Sam sprite better than the current one.

You should definitely implement gibbing and blood sprays too (and have them stay in the level), but I guess you're already working on that. Would be nice to have some simple 2D physics/destruction too, so if you shoot a blue walker with a cannonball, it would split in the middle and the body parts would fall randomly to the ground like in SSHD.

I agree, without Super Sam/Serious Mario it is like my game has lost it's soul.

Hmm, you should also work on the maps, here you have the awesome advantage of using Photoshop to craft some neat map art.

@Mischievous: Nah, I will keep the graphics simple and use what ever I can find, and I will focus more on gameplay and fixing bugs. Also I don't even want to think about making maps before I figure out how to make a simple level editor, and that will take time.

I made a little progress with my 2D skeletal animation, so I can make simple enemies with it and attach different weapons to them. Looking familiar ?

THE BLOODCRAFTER trailer is out. Check out the official thread and leave a comment.

The Bloodcrafter - official thread

Made last Saturday as a "technology test" to showcase parallax scrolling, shaders, skeletal animation and level editor and more.

This is probably the most epic thing I will ever make. And the video is awesome as well, I hope you like it

If you have Minecraft friends, please share this with them.

In this video you can see my new 2D light system in action.
I am very proud since I made it myself.

Took me some time to make this video, but I think it was worth every second of it.
No gameplay, just atmosphere ... Silent Hill atmosphere.

Great job! However, this feels only as a normal 2D shooter game with Minecraft graphics. I'd recommend you make a simple crafting system, such as dig deep to find a secret place with coal, and make a torch in dark. Or if you find diamond you can make a sword, well in other words a 2D shooter RPG game! I remember once I played a game similar to this kind.

However, you're still in testing. Good luck!

You probably refer to how he holds the double barreled shotgun. It is WIP as everything else. The player does hold different weapons in different way. It probably doesn't look best, but I don't have a good reference. Maybe if someone finds something, they could point me to it.

For now there are 3(4) ways to hold a weapon:

Yea, this was a surprise (even thought it's just 8 votes). Maybe because it is an outdated video and they think it would look like that. Silentcraft Hill and Bloodcrafter were made in just few hours, most of which was spent searching for textures. Imagine what I could make in few days if I had the time.

Also I left an option to add a suggestion, I thought maybe someone would suggest a new Serious Sam game, but I guess SS Indie series is killing me.
