ye true dat man. Also if you just make the whole floor in one texture image instead of using tiles and remap it to fit the level it'd be more easier, instead of dividing each polygons in blocks. Forgot to say this

It's not possible because the world map I have has also script images in it, so I can't just copy paste. Also imagine how big the texture have to be to not have bloom effect.

Try to do it differently from now on man, try making a single texture for an entire floor. Build the tiles in an image editor and then map it correctly in the level editor. Compression options here are very effective since undertale tiles don't use many variations of colors.

I love the concept and visuals, but I have some feedback:

  • It looks weird without any models, were you planning to add some stuff later?
  • The lighting is pretty monotonous right now, using models as torches and light sources gives you an excuse to add visual disparity.
  • The walls at fog height have a small texture size, making tiling noticeable. You can fix this by doubling the texture's size on the polygon and add a 'stain' texture on another layer with a big size (between 24x24 and 64x64)


Again, I love the visuals, I can't wait how this turns out.

Models are addictive once you learn how to use them properly. And they let you throw ridiculous amounts of details into the scene, up to the point at which the player won't be able to complain about lighting or anything else.

Looking nice so far - amazing! I like all the fog and all and the scenery is very good. Talking about models I don't know what would go there (i can think of things like statues, fire holders, etc). But trees - they're so addictive like you said (but not really other models and stuff). Sometimes I end up putting way too much trees in my levels sometimes (and copying a large cluster and spamming the level with trees...)

In fact, that is very very very sexy, I hope you're going to work with lights on that place but, it actually makes something with a good ambiance without, or you could add just few green-ish lights, or faint orange lights like torches

I agree that modelholders make levels very sexy too haha but I understand the fact you won't add, I don't even know how to UV map, I've been trying, and been always failing

What i find slightly annoying about model holders like fire holders, etc, is that there is not one element to it. Yes theres the model holder but then you need to add another model (e.g. Fire) in which case is difficult to select most times because the starting frame is at initial stage (almost no fire at all) and then a light. And sometimes the selecting process can be a bit tedious when it selects the other part of the level (and then there are same names like unnamed or light so you don't know which one is selected) unless you select a empty part of the level. I usually add fire holders in one go (copy/paste) and make sure the fire & light parents the model otherwise they'll jitter in all axis and misalign. Trees are easier, where the backspace is useful most of times, copying a large amount, and a great tool is the stretch modifier in which case it can randomize x, y, z, etc... of tree..

As for UV Mapping it's easy and hard as well. For Serious Sam, each UV map has to have its own material otherwise it might stretch and cause odd effects like stretching, and I know now (i learn't it over past few years) to seam and join edges but the UV mapping part is now for me relatively easy for most objects, but for characters & monsters its time consuming and tedious.

Oficially, Journey to Hell 3 is dead. This is the end of my work here as a Serious Sam Classic mapper. This is sad for me because Journey to Hell 3 had to be the best campaign of mine. However, it doesn't mean that I leave Seriously!. I am going to post everything about my journey through Serious Editor, everything I had planned in past, present and future. Concepts of maps, sketches and words for lost maps, Journey to Hell 3 and the future plans. Also I will post my drawings back and talk about things that were inspiration for my maps. The first part of my rise will be posted on saturday. You guys deserve to know the truth.

The rise
I was like 8 or 9 yeras old when I got Serious Sam CD. It was TFE. I have been playing it a lot, but I didn't know how to beat Ugh - Zan 3. I was using Serious Editor but I had no experience at all. I remember I copied the world base of original level and placed enemies and that was the level.

Years gone and I found Serious Sam in the internet. Also I found TSE and bought it. I always thought that bosses from SS2 were in TSE too. Also I have been reading tutorials in Serious Editor and I started getting interest in mapping.

First maps were just experiments to see how to use the Editor. I remember one map which was a destroyed building with stairs. I used point light as a sun, because I didn't know how to make backgrounds. In one map I have just used background textures on the walls while the world was on full bright.

Then I have found a MrMental4 channel on Youtube. Even today I am fascinated on how his maps felt original. And this is where my first official map is being made, well, official mappack - Desert City.

Then I sent this mappack to Mental himself and I have joined Mentalcorps in year 2012, the date when my mapping career has started.

What can I say about the Desert City? Well, when I was placing entities I was writting the cords, because I didn't know I can move them on the grid. The first map was planned to be a full desert and has a small city in the middle of the map, but due to my inexperience in creating terrains in SEMT (even today). Also there were planned parkour level because of inspiration of Assassins Creed.

The second map I have made for Mentalcorps was Persian Town. Yes, town, city... that wasn't so original. Unfortunately, there are no pictures of an old version, so I use the remade one.

There is a reference to parkour which I wanted to use in Desert City. The map is more detalied than Desert City, but shorter.

Then I was making maps, which all of them were abandoned, because of lack in motivation. Each map was inspired by a song (note that songs were the most important factor in my mapping. They will be included to every mappack, because thanks to them they were made).

Inspired by Serious Sam 2 Siriusopolis Downtown soundtrack, and a poem with the same name. The map had to be a city like New Kroy city mappack, but I had no idea how to create such city and the map was forgotten.

Demon Tower

Inspired by Metin2 Demon tower soundtrack and it's apperance. In Poland Metin2 was a popular game and that was my tribute. My map included 3 floors and one of them had ice floor.

Fort Ruina

Inspired by Cabal Fort Ruina soundtrack. Cabal was another MMO like Metin2, but it wasn't very popular in Poland, I have just found this game long time ago. The map included a town and a church, but after this I didn't continue making it.

Gnaars must die

Inspired by Orcs Must Die! game and it's traps mechanics. In map you could use traps to kill waves of Gnaars.

Mental Institution

Inspired by Serious Sam 2 level of the same name and it's soundtrack (I love this soundtrack). The map had to be the same like in Serious Sam 2 and yes, you would fight Mental.

Journey to Hell

Well, Journey to Hell. These are the best mappacks of mine (in my opinion). I don't remember well how I came up with the name. Maybe it was an inspiration from AC/DC "Highway to Hell", because I used to listen to them a lot. Journey to Hell firstly was named The journey to the Hell, then scrapped to Journey to the hell and finally Journey to Hell. Journey to Hell was planned to set a place in space, you would destroy alien space stations and fly to the Sirius, but I ended up in making the real Hell. At the beginning Journey to Hell even had an intro. In the intro you were at the airport and you were taking a plane, which was a rocket in reality. The rocket got damaged and you crushed near Hatshepsut temple. Yes, in the early versions of JtH first map used world template from Hatshepsut temple. Rocket was crashed at the very end of the map and you had to go to the temple, which was remade to the small town. The level ended inside space car that let the hero fly to the fist space station. However, I replaced first level with another one, created new lore and didn't use intro level at all.

Journey to Hell levels are my favourite ones, because they were made in times when I didn't really care about story being more serious and this is why we are in the Hell.

The Dungeon

As I said, the story was completely different and instead of visiting the temple you have visited a dungeon. Map was inspired by Serous Sam 2 medieval soundtrack. In the map I made a room with bouncers that was similar to Solais survival map in SS3. I have seen this map in a Youtube video and thought that would be a nice idea to put it on the map. Map ended with SS3 song "Gladiator" because I was hyped about SS3 soundtrack these times.

Prince Gardens

This map was difficult one. At the beginning it had a different name "Green Yard" and it used grass on the walls. It looked awful so I decided to transform it into the babylonian garden and voila. It used SS2 music from giant junkyard and it was fit good, but sounded funny at times.

Gate to Hell

Or The Giant Gate to the Hell as it was planned to have such name. Dark map in which I made a polish flag secret and promised to myself that each third map of JtH campaign will have polish flag secret in it. There is a Kukulkan boss, who had a different area in beta version of the game, but the area was so small and I decided to create a bigger one (which still was too small). Boss music is a "Hand of God" by Night Mistress, because.. yes... I was hyped about them.

Hell

This map was horrible in beta... I remade it nearly completely to make it look good. Of course SS2 was there because t had Kleer planet which is similar to hell so it makes sense. At the end I am satysfied with this map.

Guardian of Hell

This map had it's feeling... With those floating stars and very reddish background I felt like I was in realy Hell. Guardian of Hell is of course an inspiration by SS3 level "Guardian of time", I even used it soundtrack. The map was a mix between The Grand Cathedral and The Great Pyramid, with long corridors and arenas with enemies coming from the buildings. Final boss was the Exotech Larva (fun fact is that at the first time larva clipped through the pyramid and it booty was seen from the beginning of the level). I used "Ungrateful" by Escape the Fate because... hype.

The campaign was planned to have NETRICSA messages, but I didn't have enough experience with them in those times.

Desert Scream

An official map that was never released.

Alright. So the Desert Scream map was huge. One map with almost 2 hours of gameplay. Main theme was an egyptian temple complex. The beginning of the level was used later in The Darkside of Sirius mappack. Firstly soundtrack was taken from TFE - Alley of the sphinxes and later changed to SS3 one.

I used textures from TSE intro level only. I didn't have textures from TFE. Somehow such huge map didn't cause any fps drops, which I was proud of.

There were a lot of locations on the map - open arenas, long corridor, small rooms with traps, severs and even a canyon. Unfortunately there are no screens of severs and canyon.

The map was intended to be 30 - 50 minutes long. There haven't been secrets made yet.

But why this map wasn't released? The reason why you can't play this map is Serious Editor crash when I was creating the map. Because of no backup files I lost all content and that was end of Desert Scream map.

It's nice that you look into your own maps, a good way to be grateful of your own job. I like reading your stuff.
Tho, the lighting was very linear on your map but I would have loved to play on it, 2h of gameplay !

The screenshots above are nothing compared to the final version. It misses 50% of the map. The map was more detailed. As I said it had severs and a canyon. I wish I could back in time to 2002 - 2003 as 15 years old and create those maps. Now I don't have time to create a map and lack of motivation when I know I am making map for the game that is dead... I wish someday I would find game with similar map making, which is fresh, but I know this is impossible.

I wish I could go back in time too haha! I know that feeling, but don't loose motivation, it's very precious.

Also like you said about going back in time same thought for me, that I could go back to that point as well - where as now I barely made any maps this past year or two (bits and pieces of maps though), and unlike in the past I have made tons of maps - and was constantly motivated to do so (although I map a lot better then I do when i was about 9 or 10 years old )

Deathmatch map based on map in Wolf Team game which I was playing years ago. That was my favourite map. Not much to say, just a simple map, but I like the details I made back then.
