Ok, thanks for the offer. I suppose I could use some help animating moving objects if you have knowledge of that (moving smaller asteroids would look pretty sweet I imagine).

Decided to scale down the map to a much smaller size, previously it was way too big for DM (or at least, there were far too many hiding spots). I think it looks smoother and neater now, and I would not like to tone down the terrain more than this because asteroids are supposed to look rough and rugged. I also started adding background asteroids, retextured some SS3 rocks to place all over the map in advance, and added some iron ore decals (Space Engineers players will know ).

I'll be adding more ore types later and I'm also going to attempt building some kind of space station on the main asteroid. Also got some planets I'm planning to add in the background.

Pretty happy with how the asteroid models turned out. They aren't perfect but I think I did a quite good job considering I just used stock SED3.5 tools to do them, and they look really cool with lighting and shadows. Authentic at least imo.

If it is about animated movers then that's np, also to make those big asteroids look rougher you should try to select only a part of the side you wanna change and then use the Displace in another direction, standard is positive y, 2 sides use the positive axes and other 2 sides will use the negative axes, you should change all sides this way

Imo the background asteroids should have a more larger (as in, smaller stretch value) texture, not the same as the texture of the main asteroid, as you want the background ones to look good from far, while the main one to look good from close.

They do, 50 vs 190, for the stain texture 1.5 vs 4. I think they look fine.

Shame we don't have editable gravity anymore, that'd make this map the tits. Cannons will make up for it though I'm sure.

I'd suggest to put more detail on that landing zone or w/e it is, maybe use detail normal map and make it really small so it even has its detail when you look very close at it, also yeah, maybe add something to make it unique like Solais suggested, make it rotate slowly so it won'T always be at the same placement like: "You are infront of that landing zone and face that planet, after a while you would face the sun instead". Also, the asteroids still need some deforming, they still look too sphere like to me, use my suggestion before to change that

Yes yes I will continue to add more detail, it's all still an early wip. Jeez, feels like the quality standards/demands on this forum have gone up drastically.

and no I won't rotate the entire asteroid because it will have models on it.

Plus I may run out of time making this map, university's starting again soon and I won't be slaving myself in Sed3 once it does, these may be the last SS3 works you'll see from me. I've mapped too much as it is

Being honest those asteroids flying around look like floating water balls they look so shiny.

Other than that looks gud fizny, I should get my ass off Counter-Strike: Source and do Lunar Convoy now

I'm aware it's not the most top quality looking and that it needs to be much smoother and more rounded and texturing isn't the best and yada yada. It's the most decent one I could come up with in a reasonable amount of time.

I added more asteroids like that floating all around the level, and there are more planets too, with different colors and sizes to make them more distinct.

The floors you see there are made of blocks and I'm planning to make some kind of structures out of them later, Space Engineers style.

Nah it very obviously looks like blocky shit and I should flip the table and give up because I will never make anything that looks good. Zocky could make all that shit in less than 10 minutes. Heck most people probably could.

You need professional quality in these SED3 maps. One must slave well over 500 hours minimum on a developer team quality map so that it's worthy for release, and only once one's eyes are bleeding red and you're about to die from starvation, you can upload the map.

(Am just kidding with the above, if anyone took it seriously. )

Not sure if good idea. I could make them more elaborate still and go a bit further with the blocks theme. Planning to add some terminals and computers inside that interior if I can.

Pretty cool idea with the blocks. I know you're trying to mimic Space Engineers, but (if you didn't already know) using pre-made sections/blocks like that is a common technique level designers use, called modularity. So I think it's a great idea to experiment with that some more.

Incidently, Croteam is using a lot of modular assets too. That's why people can make levels out of using only unmodified assets.

Maybe it's sorta similar, but my idea was more miniscule, as in Minecraft style blocks.

I made a trailer for all the three maps I showcased recently, since they have been released in the latest SFL pack:

And now I think I'll take my long overdue short retirement from SED3, I think I'll look at mapping for it again with Talos or SS4 possibly. I started working on a game of my own in Unity instead, and I'd also like to take a look at modding/mapping for Source games in the future (I did attempt a TF2 map once that I got too bored to finish ).

**** it, working with SED3 again.

Thought that previous gigantic terrain map I started would make a nice map for Pan's work in progress Dogfight (Star Sam) mod.

It's still work in progress, I only just finished working on the terrains, up next I'll add lighting, and I'm also planning to add whole forests to the grassy regions of the map with the use of crumbs. In terms of scale it is absolutely the biggest map I've ever worked on, I may have to scale it down a lot for gameplay. Though I'm thinking it will look pretty damn sweet once I have trees all over. It gets foggier the higher your altitude is too, maybe I could even make a snowfall effect for the mountainous regions (IF I get extremely nitpicky. ).

Could include a few Uncharted 2 references too, maybe I'll make it take place in the Tibetan mountains.
