Default The joys of DRM...

Well, it seems Ubisoft messed up Uplay, so it lets pretty much anyone execute just about anything on a users PC - i.e. they made a wide open backdoor that anyone can use.

Oh, the joys of being a paying consumer in this age of overly intrusive DRM...

And now the waiting game to see if it gets exploited on a large scale before Ubisoft fix it.

Well damn, was planning on resuming my ACII playthrough one of these days.

But it shouldn't do anything if Uplay isn't actually running on the PC at the time right?

Why should you care? You usually don't about these things. I'm pretty sure hackers will make exception just for you.

I don't usually care if there's a backdoor on my PC that anyone can exploit? Since when did I say that?

i meant drm. You are usually quite fine with them, even when people explain something like this can happen.

I don't mind DRM as long as it's not a harm to myself. If DRM becomes a harm to myself then...

Hey, maybe that has already been the case for a longer time

From what I have heard this backdoor is in the Uplay browser plugin that is installed on your system without your knowledge or permission.

Just went and uninstalled all Ubisoft games. Is there any way to double-check and ensure that the browser plug-in was deleted with them, as well as all traces of U-play?

Score one for the... well... maybe Ubisoft will change it's creepy DRM ways?...

It's like Activision, EA, Ubisoft are really competing for the title of 'most villainous publisher'.

Ubisoft is a perplexing company. On one hand it releases the older products on GOG completely free of any anti-customer software, but on the other hand it has stuff like Uplay and think it is okay to secretly install browser plug-ins on a user's system without permission or transparency, whether said plug-in opens up a gigantic security threat or not.

I would say Ubisoft is somewhere between Activision and EA, personally, EA being the most evil.

Well apparently, it's been patched. Still a nasty thing to let slip by.

I wish Ubisoft would stop giving people reasons to hate them. I don't think they're anywhere near as "evil" as Activision or EA. If they just got rid of Uplay and stuck with Steam (if they were to use DRM at all), I don't think there would be much reason to hate them.
