Wink Next Encounter Mods

Would it be impossible to mod SS:NE? As far as I know, at least the GC versions files are .gro files... my thoughts have been SS:XBox on GC... that at least would be impssible

I have no idea how to read data from gamecube discs (I tried, lol), but I managed to at least extract part of the PS2 file format, but I never continued working on it.. but yeah, it's possible, if you rip the game from disc, modify files and run it in an emulator afterwards.

Gamecube games need a special disc drive that spin in the opposite direction than a normal drive to be read. XD

Ah, that explains. Lol!

Anyway, there's some .cfg files in the TNE game files, you can mess around with those and try it in an emulator:

BASE.CFG:
Code:
#
# Global variable definitions
#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!
#
(Do you know what you're doing? )

Disclaimer: I've never tried it myself.

I Don't know

Actually, after looking a bit more inside, the files are stored as .ssw (levels), .ssg (multiplayer skins) and .sst (textures). I think those are what you get when you extract a .gro file (ss might stand for Serious Sam, never encountered these file extensions before in a GC game), but I've never done that.

On the GC version? I'm not sure about that, because I can't read the disc on my PC.

On the PS2 version it's all compressed .G files, which after decompression poops out a (seemingly) custom file format.

Yup, the GC version. I think the PS2 .G turns into the same file formats as GC has, but I don't know, since I don't own PS2 or the Next Encounter for PS2:

The world files are .W files, the packages are .G files.

Uncompressed .W files start with the following bytes: (Tested CANYON.W)

Code:
01 00 00 00 64 00 00 00 00 21 03 00 68 4E 09 00
Compressed, they all start with the word "CLIMAX".

Scratching my head there. These don't seem familiar at all!
The GC version's libs seem a lot more friendly.

Oh wow. So the levels were actually split up in development. Also, they are in order, unlike the game where they just removed levels from the main campaign for them to be unlockable, which was a pretty stupid decision.

Yeah. Actually. never realised that, bben quite a while from actually played the game through But again, do any of the modders see anything familiar here? Do we have even 0.1% of hope of getting SS:Xbox on GC (lol.)?

The engines are not the same (Serious Engine and Climax' engine are both unique products).

If anyone's interested, I could look into the file formats, although I'm somehow suspecting someone already did that at one point.

I thought the NE engine was just a low-quality version of the XBOX port of Serious Engine... I guess you learn every day something new

Yes! Do that! I want mods for this awesome game! Sorry. But you should still look at it.

The Xbox version is made by Croteam and indeed uses the Serious Engine, but since Climax has nothing to do with that, they had to make their own engine for NE.

Right. Keep forgetting that this is CLIMAX' game, not Croteam's.

I actually thought as well that SSNE used a modified SE1.

Actually, I'll tell you a story. Me and my friend were always arguing which was better, XBox or GC. I had great classics for Gamecube, such as Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Serious Sam: Next Encounter. He had like the worst games on Xbox, but he had the Xbox version of Serious Sam. And I loved it. And I once promised, that some day, I will playFirst or Second Encounter on Gamecube. That would end our fight. Every year he's like: "well, I guess you can't hold your promises after all!". That's why my question on this thread was that. Also low-quality version of SS:Xbox on GC would be mind-blowing awesome. Just sayin'.

Not like anyone cares, but here's some useless metadata extracted from decompressed Gamecube files: (This confirms that GC and PS2 use the exact same format, which is to be expected )

That VENICE.W makes me curious. Time to launch SSNE again.

Also, interesting that if you really think about it, SSNE actually only has 12 levels just like TSE, they were just split up due to the lack of memory, that's why it has like 43 levels.

By the way, should I blame the Lane?

Unless when I use this nice blue color I totally didn't steal from Blizzard.

I just noticed that the "nickname" is actually for the user, not the map, lol.

Jamesl = Blame the lane
Rob = unnamed
Chrisr = Rundle Fly
Sbarlow = sam
Markd = eater of all pies

Damnit Mark! Leave some pie for me.

It's acctually possible to run modded SSNE (well if you manage it ) on the actual console. Not sure for NE, but definetly on PS2 with a modchip (which I have too, it was bundled with the cheapest PS2 what canI do bout it ).

If you get any kind of mods going on (I suck at modding ) I can definately be at least a tester. I have a modified GameCube and PCSX2 seems to work pretty well on my PC

Thanks dude!

Anyways, I tried doing some stuff, like renaming those .W to .gro... Guess what? IT WORKED!... i lie.

Nah, i tried a lot of stuff but still nothing. It's pretty complicated when you don't know coding that much, like me Well I can't blame myself, 8th grade lol. I only learned some stuff on MS logo and stuff, but I know some stuff like modding L4D without the add-on support, modifying an exe file n stuff.

I think SS NE uses Serious Engine 1, if you read about Direct X7 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct3D#Direct3D_5_to_9 and about features of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenGL_Shading_Language this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenGL#OpenGL_1.3 based on this info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectDraw_Surface
