Default Ion Maiden by 3D Realms

This thread is for Dave3d:

YouTube Video: Ion Maiden Trailer

It's a new game being made in the Build engine. Unfortunately it is 64 bit, so it doesn't run in DOS

Also, if you think you saw that cover somewhere before, you are right:

.....
Sigh, good times and bad times.

Edit:
Wow.
A remake of a lot of old games in that trailer.
I saw Duke, Blood, Shadow Warrior, and another game I cant quite tell what it is. ROTT? Maybe.
Edit 2:
Definitely Doom in there.

Thanks AntonioR !
I will have to check it out when/if it comes out.

And, its free to those that already have the Bombshell Digital Deluxe Edition (or upgrade to BDDE).
Thats pretty cool.
It 'should' be free to anyone that owns Bombshell imo, but I guess thats the perks of DDE.
Being made on the Build engine.
LOL
What is essentially a pro dev team that is using a 20+ year old engine that has been released for free to everyone, and charging money like its a current gen game?
Seems to me that they are having financial problems.
And, since they changed their dev name from the games they have already made, I am more than guessing they have fallen on hard times.
I hope they do the game well, and dont steal other peoples IP/work to make a game they are selling.
And, targeting 60fps on a 20+ year old engine? You have got to be S'ing me. That should run 1000 frames, even if they make the game frikin HUGE in terms of size of the files they will have to do to make it look good
Dang.
Blood.
I wish I could play it and QA it though, and see if its going to be good or not.
They do want to do old school gaming, at least the fast paced portion of it.
Guess we will see.

It's a good start, but the preview campaign's first level didn't have that instant-classic first level vibe as many of the old Build games. Also I found the enemy sprites generic, and often dark enough to blend in to the background. The music is also kinda meh.

Besides these problems, I'll still keep my eye on it, maybe the full game will iron out these issues.

I tried it out but it ran very poorly on my system (i7 4770k and 1080ti) so I got a refund. If and when the game is optimised better then I'll pick it up again.

I agree about the sprites being a little generic and dark but I did really like the layout of the first map once I got outside.

Definitely going to be keeping an ion this one (see what I did there?).

Wow.
Just, wow.
That is terrible.
With a system like that, you should not be having any issues with a game that old. Unless, like I said before, they are just making huge HD files tacked onto the engine, then it will run poorly. But, it is using only 1 core with that engine also, not multiple cores. And I wonder if they bought Nglide support or not?
But, it should not run THAT poorly.

Can I ask if you are on windows 10 or not?
I am betting that you are.
Win10 does not support those old dos games, and IIRC Nvidia removed support for some old versions of OpenGL.
I wonder if that is the issue?

Edit:
Also, lol on the 'Ion' joke, heh.

Yeah, it's Windoze 10 (had nothing but hassle ever since I 'upgraded'...).

As far as I know, the engine the devs are using is actually a custom build of EDuke32 so it's not the old DOS-age engine. I do know that the textures and sprites are super high res compared to the orginal Build games and that, in itself, is causing issues. The engine just isn't built to deal with such things efficiently. I did hear that they were aware of its clunkiness and were working hard on an optimisation update.

I've been stung too many times in the past by purchasing early build games on the promise that it would run better in future but the optimisations failed to materialise. That's why I just went straight for a refund this time. I want to play the game running smoothly so that I can enjoy it the way it was intended.

Oh please don't let me put you off the game. Everyone else and their dog seem to have little to no issue with the game running well and it does have a lot of potential.

The best thing about Steam is that if you don't like the game, you can get a refund.

Yup, eduke32 with hd everything is just like using nglide with hd everything. But, you are right, the engine just isnt built for tacking on hd stuff.
They need an eduke 64 though, and a 64bit version of the build engine, which doesnt exist, for win10.

If anyone can make it work though, they can.
Fred worked with the build engine for a long while before going to unreal engine, so I would bet they can get it working properly.

But yeah, I dont do preorders anymore, or kickstarters, or anything like that. Been burned too many times also.

I hope someone here gets the game though, and lets us know how it runs when it gets completed. Must be a full run though for me to believe anything anymore, especially steam related. The 2 hour mark is a biotch. Make a good game that lasts just a little over 2 hours, then crap the rest, and noone can do anything about it, heh.

i have a nvidia gtx 780, 8gb ddr2 corsair ram, intel core extreme qx9775 clocked to 3.6ghz (never had problems with it its a nice quad core) and still Eduke 32 with the HRP lags asf, and Ion Maiden has the same lag issues, I tried all possible rendering and other options and it didn't fix the lag. I use windows 7 ultimate

Hey Kaz.
Yeah, your system is old though, even with the 780.
His is a much newer cpu and a 1080ti, and it lags. Thats bad.
So, 2 people say its laggy, then it must be.
Suxorz, but not unexpected with that old an engine.
I am just terribly surprised they are trying to sell a game in 2017 with an engine from 1994(?).
Thats just bad all around.
Shoot, whatsisname was going to remake a free Blood game, but couldnt get the rights. I LOVE oldschool fps games, and dont know if I would pay for a stuttery 1994 engine, yes I know eduke is newer doesnt matter, in todays glorious pixel age gaming, but I still wouldnt mind trying it out.
I hope the have a demo.

Sorry, hurting and on tablet, mispells everywhere.

Yeah but I can run UE4 games and Quake Champions on MAX settings, I shouldn't have problems running a game using a 20+ year old engine unless it's optimized like crap (which it is) XD

Yeah, it's strange that the performance issues only seem to affect some users.

Do you know if there have been any updates since the first one just after launch? I'm curious to see how it develops.

Well, anybody buy this yet?
Has it gotten better?
Is it still hitchy?
Really keeping an eye out on this one, because if it can be another Duke3d, then I am all in. I still play duke every once in a while. Shoot, I still have a 98se machine just for those old games I have that only play well on a dos machine, lol.

Apparently there were two larger updates focusing on performance. But I can't tell if it got better, since I had no problems to begin with.

Well, I tried it since it was on sale.
What a joke, cant even play it.
They hardcoded keys. SERIOUSLY? In this day and age? And with NO way to clear the hardcoded entries.
Jump both jumps AND fires. Strafe left strafes left AND turns left at the same time, turning you in 2/10's of a second 1/2 way around.
They need a real QA person to test this game. Hello, left handed gamers anyone? Right side keyboard players anyone?
Too bad. I got good performance, but getting refund. I should not have to go into cfg files in this day and age to set my frikin KB/Mouse up.
Big disappointment.

Since it's still in Early Access, probably the best if you go on the steam forums of the game and share your feedback.
