Default Flamethrower?

i was wondering if any of you out there have done the classic aresol can Flamethrower trick. You know, where you take bug spray or some other flammable thing and spray it through a lighter? If any of you have done this, what would you say creates the best flame?

You shouldn´t try mine: If I remember right, Uranium 256 and fire makes a nuclear blast.

Where can you find Uranium anyways?

you want a flame thrower? here's a tip. think of a flame thrower as a super soaker. they both work on the same principal. i.e. ejecting liquid under pressure. if you want, they sell plans for flamers at futurehorrizons.com.

Yeah, wouldn't the flame go into the super soaker and then explode your arms off?

To make it safe (hahaha yeah right) you would need to modify super soaker to prevent that but since it's plastic anyways I don't think it would last long

i was useing the super soaker as a reference. it's a metaphore. if you make a metal supersoaker, fill it with a flamable liquid, then pressureize the contents, you have your flamer. just get a pilot light on the muzzle, and there you go. it's actually the simplest weapon to be invented in the 20th century. if it isn't, it's definately the runner-up.

Yeah, Ed is right. A real flamethrower has a cutoff mechanism in the nozzle to prevent the flame from going up into the gun when you release the trigger, and as long as the pressure is high enough, the flame won't get sucked in while you're firing. Heh, firing.

But to answer the first question posed in this thread, yeah, I've done the aerosol can thing with a few different materials. WD-40 works well for a nice, good looking fireball (don't use the little plastic nozzle extension though, unless you want to lose an arm). If you want something really cool, try enamel paint in a can, sprayed onto something fireproof. The paint ignites in the air, and then sticks to the surface and continues burning for a brief period before it's consumed. You can also coat a surface with it, and then spray a flame onto it while it's still wet to ignite the entire surface.

What´s inside a normal flamer, I can see long pipe with many holes at the end but a big tank connecting to the pipe.

Does the tank contain gas?

I don't think so: gas would take too much space for the firepower ( ) provided. It's probably liquid that is used, just like in everything else.

I understand that a real flamethrower uses a stickyish liquid, so that it actually stays on the target, like napalm.

See www.howstuffworks.com for further reference.

yea... real flame throwers are nasty buisness... i think they shot flames really far also... unlike most games.

but i would say if u got a nice big super soaker and filled it with something flameable and very liquidy.. and then made sure it had a big barrel.

from there get a long pice of metal tubing that fits inside the spray nosel and insert it in there and make sure there are no leaks around it and i guess it could help out a bit with flame problems. hehe and u can duct tape the lighter on the thing

I hate that about games, like the new usermade Flamer for UT2003, it got rather short fire lenght.

here is what flame throwers are normally loaded with. it can be any of the following.

deisel/kerosene mixture
napalm(any gelled petrolium substance is called napalm)

never gasoline. it burns too quickly. you want something that has a slow burn that'll stick to things.

and for the record, an average flame thrower, depending on the fuel and pressure, can shoot as far as thirty feet or more... give or take.

you would probably also have to worry about the fuel eating through the supersoaker's water bottle, but then who knows, they might be made out of the same stuff as those plastic gasoline cans.

...well, the US army has this one landing craft that is armed with a flame thrower that has a maximum range of like, two miles. heh, talk about reaching out.

you guys ever seen say the WW2 footage of tank mounted flamer throwers completely totaly incinerating bunkers and pillpoxes from a couple hundred yards away. awe inspiring.

Why do game designers insist on protraying flamer throwers as basicly...big blowtorches? the reality is much more interesting/cool. I want streams of flaming liquid arcing through the air and forming pools damnit!

Yes, joben, I have, which is what inspires me so! I find it utterly amazing! Even watching some Vietnam footage from when they were clearing the surrounding jungle is a good example of the power and range of these flame throwers

About the uranium thing: Just burning uranium wont make a nuclear explosion. Nukes work by exploding conventional bombs around the uranium in a way that applies a massive pressure and force on the uranium and causes it to become unstable and violently react. Then you can divert the force from the nuke to make a secondary reaction, making a hyrogen bomb. However, i think that a small amount of uranium under the right (wrong?) conditons can reach critical mass out of nowhere and have a nuclear explosion of a sort. Anyone care to correct me on any of that?

And Ed, 2 miles? Thats seems really far for a flamethrower. Wouldnt you hit all sorts of stuff in the way?

Don't worry, I have a plan. I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to speed around the city, keeping it's speed over 50, and if it's speed dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down".

Two miles is a bit drastic... A few hundred yards though, and very easily!

Assuming I were to use a super soaker, would I need to line the container with some sort of coating to prevent corrosion? If so, does anyone know what?
