Default Terrain Painting Help

I've tried all the tutorials found in these forums and none of them clearly explain the process. I mean what is the correct UVmap that should be used (Fit UV, Y-Planar Don't Fit)? Also, how do you cycle through the layers? Are they tied with the RGBA channels? Basically, I want 2 textures to be shown, grass and tiles.

This is the configuration for the polygen map:

I did choose that mask texture as the paint texture and I chose "Texture" as the UVmap in the Paint Displace tool settings.

For this one, the best if you use the Texture UVmap, but before starting, make sure you Fit UV it in the right-side menu.

Yes, they are tied to RGBA channels, as every layer is a color. However, it is advised if you only use four layers only. Layer 1 should be always something, but that would be used for the Black color of the mask texture. I don't recommend using grass for that layer, as the mask texture can be reused for making Crumbs as well. Then, besides black, the three other layers are Red, Green and Blue. I don't know what's Layer 5 is, maybe White/Alpha, but I heard you better not use that or it ****s up everything.

So what exactly should I put at Layer 1? And how do I make Layer 2 (Grass) to be mapped fully on the polygen?

Everything that is not Layer 1 must be painted on with the Paint tool. With the Brush tool open, you can change the brush types and their size as well.

Layer 1 can be anything really, I usually use a texture that I know will have no crumbs on it in the end.

Ah, yes, the "I can't paint even if I set up everything correctly" thing, it happens to me as well. Look at how large the mask texture is. If it says 0x0, you need to set its size by clicking the + near where you set it up in the shader to edit its size. However, after you painted even a little on it, it's not the best to resize it, or it will bug out, creating large artefacts on the texture.

Right, I forgot about that. Well, then, the only thing you can do is experimenting with the paint tool, like checking off "paint only selected" or "ignore backface polygons" and such.

A dumb question, but whatever.. did you set the terrain mask in the Paint Tool? [there's a thing where you choose what mask you'll paint on]

Are there any videos about this?

Try invoking the UV Map window (num 8) and painting in the UV space (i.e. on the mask itself) and see if it does anything in object space. You might need to increase the scale of your brush. For better visibility you can also render the mask in the UV Map window via menu at it's top (the biggest one).

The texture seems fine. I'd like to see screenshot of paint/displace tool panel. Do you know how to bring up brush palette? alt+B if I'm not mistaked...

I got it to work, though the only minor problem left is making the "Layer/Stone Tiles" appear stronger. Go to the link in my signature and scroll down to see pictures showing the terrain.
Also, "N" opens the brush tool while in Mesh Editor.

Brush palette is a window with brush settings such as alpha image, size, falloff and color. What you mentioned is the paint/displace tool.

Oh yes, didn't notice that. I believe it's accessed from the same tab under the tool (dunno what's the hot key). Tried playing with it a little bit to change the Fall off and Hot spot to increase the "strength" of the stone tiles layer but didn't work.

Check if color of the brush is absolutely white. Brush has a color picker mode which can be accidently toggled, thus the problem with opacity. (I think that's what you meant by "strength").

Yeah, opacity. Was looking for the right word.

I did set it to white.
