As I recall, somebody made a flowchart of scifi and fantasy derivitaves.
Something like Nordic myth -> LOTR -> D&D -> Harry Potter

- Both villains perfer their names to not be spoken
- Both villains were great dominators, until their downfall
- Both villains turned into a bodiless "evil spirit" form after their defeat
- Both villains caused the protagonist to have visions of them upon their return
- Both villains have an underling "Wormtongue" and "Wormtail"

Well, you gotta admit this can't just be coincidence. I am curious though if anyone else has pointed this out or if Rowling has mentioned influences for the character.
I know this is Outdated but I agree with you. There are more 'Coincidences' than that. I think JKR did rip off Tolkien's LOTR. And the comments that came before my comment that say her work is 'original' is wrong. But you have to remember that this is Fantasy were talking about. Everyone rips each other off simply because Trolls and Elves are the basics of Fanatasy.

-Gollum=Dolby
-The fellowship fought a cave troll in Moria=Harry fought a cave troll in book one.
-Frodo falls into the Dead Marshes=When Harry draws water from the lake, Inferi (the corpses floating beneath the surface, now animated) emerge and attempt to drag Harry into the lake.
-Gandalf=Dumbledore
-Frodo and Sam recieve a cloak which makes them invisible and blends in with their surroundings= Harry recieves a Invisibilty Cloak from his father for a christmas present.
-(Evil, creepy hooded creatures) Dementors = LOTR Nazgul
-(Giant Spider) Aragog = Shelob
-(Mischievous pair) Fred & George Weasley=Merry and Pippin (film version)
-(Forbidden language) Saying "Voldemort"=Black Speech of Mordor
-(Dangerous willow tree) Whomping Willow=Old Man Willow
-(Basin of seeing) Pensieve=Galadriel's Mirror
-(Basin of Scar from Evil forces) Harry's scar on forehead=Frodo's scar from the Morgul Blade.
-(Powerful, life-saving swords) Godric Gryffindor's sword=Anduril.
-(Do not disturb water because of...)The giant squid=Watcher in the Water
-(Longed for safe-haven)During the summer Harry wishes he was back at Hogwarts=On their quest, the hobbits long to be back in the safety of the Shire.

You should watch Seirei no Moribito then, it's fantasy, but it doesn't have dragons, or orcs, or evil villian, or anything of the tipical fantasy world....almost.

Even who appears to be villian at first, you soon find out, there is no "villian of the story", everyone are just doing what any person would do in certain moment. I actually loved it for that.

Now, i only watched HP a bit, but it didn't really strike me like LOTR ripoff at all; they are both fantasy, but i didn't see really so many similarities; the feeling was very different when watching both.

You really should not use the LOTR series as the starting point for copies. Much of the Tolkien stories can be found in biblical era stories. JRR in fact was developing the languages used, and from that and morals flowed the stories. Don't forget that much of the story of Star Wars also uses Tolkien as a starting point. It is not a rip off as much as a guide.
