Lightbulb Let's talk about movies and stuff

I had a Matrix marathon yesterday and man, those sequels s*ck more than I remember. But enough about that.

If I understood correctly every few generations some people get out of the Matrix and start freeing other people. Then after some time machines make a big attack and kill them all. It happened five times before the movie. It has something to do with the intentional flaws in the Matrix design.

But, wouldn't it be easier for machines if they would breed sterile people ? There would be less free people and they would not be so eager to fight back if they have no future.

Sorry I have to say this. They probably can't get as much juice from the sterile ones.

For every generation the Matrix movies have other and other meanings.

For me the movies mean, that the creator is afraid of the new-world-order-people: the act like just robots.

I'd imagine machines have evolved to such a point that they have the ability to get bored... Since they don't want to fight amongst themselves for entertainment, they let free people multiply and rebel against them so they can fight something, you know, just until they find some suitable alien race to conquer or something...

Actually... What DO the machines do all day?... What's a day like in the life of the average Matrix machine?

I dont think I know of ANY movies that are coming out this year that I'm even remotely interested in. I might remember one or something later, but so far not so much.

Movies really are getting worse, or at least the big ones are becoming less and less interesting. The industry is in decline.

Regarding the Matrix, I think the original film was clever, although not nearly as good as many people seemed to think. The sequels were inferior.

The original film had serious flaws from the POV of hard science fiction. Howver, it was open to multiple interpretations and held that potential for interpretative richness upon multiple viewings. One could tak it literally or allegorically, and as a metaphorical conceit it was pleasantly versatile.

The sequels ruined this by endeavoring to explain everything and make it into hard science fiction. By adding detail they removed ambiguity; several elements appeared either superfluous or included solely for the sake of making sure the viewer interpreted everything in exactly one way. The intertextuality was destroyed, and most or all of the characters lost their interest.

There were some good things about the sequels, to be sure. I liked some bits. Overall, however, the original was much better as a standalone.

Speaking of new Resident Evil movie, they said after that a new Silent Hill movie will come out. I am looking forward to that, even though I would like the movie was based on SH2 an not SH3.

I'm really looking forward to The Hunger Games and The Hobbit. Entroper and I had an epic LoTR marathon on New Year's Day. All three extended editions back to back.

I keep telling myself I am going to do that one of these days, but it will have to wait a few years for them to seem fresh.

The Hobbit, John Carter... I actually don't follow movies enough to know about what's coming out.

I agree with Darth Plato about modern movies and his view of Matrix sequels. Except that I didn't find anything I liked in the sequels. For me it was a cheap film(s) with no real idea behind it, made only to milk some money out of the franchise.

Ha, same here. I guess we should wait for an extended version of Hobbit and then watch all four movies in a marathon.

There's really nothing I'm particularly psyched about this year...

Except for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter! The idea sounds really badass! As far as vampire hunting goes, I've only seen Blade, but if this is anything like that, but with Abraham Lincoln instead, it should be really badass!

Edit: Oh yea... There's also The Expandables 2, should be somewhat fun, but I'm not expecting much from it.

Edit 2: Bad Ass seems neat, thank you mr Grimmjaw! Danny Trejo is indeed badass

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is based on a book that came out in 2010. My guess is that the idea for the book came from a 2001 movie called Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter, in which Jesus teams up with Mexican wrestler/superhero Santos to rid Montreal of vampires.

Presumably the joke will be less likely to offend when the revered figure is Lincoln rather than Jesus Christ, resulting in a larger audience. Presumably the new film will feature fewer lesbian scenes and kung-fu battles.

While I believe in evaluating films in terms of intended genre (thus allowing for good "bad" movies) there appears to be little hope of many films to come that will be just plain good. This is mainly but not only true of US films, which are still the main trendsetters in the commercial arena. I say this because of the trends in media, the history of film as a medium, and the way the American film industry works.
